This is looking up to be promising. While still in early development (so far there's a very early unstable text client), this is getting quite a bit of attention as of recent, and if done right and manages to withstand public cryptanalysis, it might be a great reason to ditch Skype once and for all.
Tox uses similar to the Skype P2P-model of interaction in the network for the dissemination of messages which use cryptographic techniques to authenticate the user and protect the transit traffic from interception. Support text messaging, voice, video and file transfer. The work is organized through a simple and typical of IM-client graphical interface.
One of the key objectives of the project is to ensure the privacy and confidentiality of correspondence, including protection from a possible traffic analysis intelligence services. For ensuring addressing of users used the distributed hash table (DHT) which organized the work in the style of BitTorrent. The communication channel has been organized by means of a superstructure over the UDP protocol with realization of session level (Lossless UDP).
For identification of each user is used the special public key which also is applied as an open key to enciphering. Separately generated private key to decrypt messages encrypted with the identity / public key. To organize the communication connection is required for the peer (each client network is a peer), which can be defined manually or automatically found (function of search of peers in a local network is available).
Tox code is written on C and licensed under the GPLv3. Supported platforms: Linux, Windows and Mac OS X. For the organization of the encryption library is used libsodium. The functionality is still in development at the level of a series of test prototypes console client written using the library ncurses, and a graphical client-based Qt5.

It won't be any better because it has the same fucking stupid glittering eye-candy theme. Skype program SUCKS because of it's design, and when Microshaft bought Skype, it started to SUCK even more because of the crashes and slow response... if you look at old skype versions, man those were the versions. Clean, simple design, fast and no stupid eye-candy.
If Tox will have an option to switch themes, then I think I'll ditch that stupid Skype client and use Tox, only because I don't want sparkling bullshit in my eyes.
Also they might get assfucked pretty quickly from all sides by microshaft... because of monopoly...

And that is exactly the point.
For facebook goes the same, if you dont have it you cannot communicate with your "friends"
Alternatives-> assfucked
As goes skype; if its not compatible people are not gonna use it.
Alternatives -> assfucked
Who gives a damn that microsoft sells all your data directly to anyone with money.... booring.

Seeing how this originated from /g/ I was skeptical at first, but this is coming up nicely. I think there's been mention of making Tox 'skinnable' or having a graphical and command line frontends but don't take my word for it, I haven't been following the Tox threads for the last couple of days. Guess we'll have to wait for a while.

Calm your autism.
The GUI you see on the website is a proof-of-concept only and the actual one will likely be quite different. Even if it is the same, it'd still be radically less bloated than Skype.
As of now, the only stable client is the text one. There is also a pre-alpha Qt5 GUI in C++ for Windows and Linux that looks like this:
(https://github-camo.global.ssl.fastly.net/7445e2c8c68b50aa6cad15ad2b8d23414c50181d/687474703a2f2f692e696d6775722e636f6d2f5776336c724f372e706e67)
Then there's some other GUI for OS X called Poison that I really haven't been following.
Also I don't think Microsoft can directly take legal action b/c they're not exploiting the Skype protocol in any way. They use free software libraries for crypto and networking.
Try compiling the client for yourself before going on such diatribes.

Doesn't matter if they can't actually go anywhere, the problem is that legal fees are so high microsoft could just take them to court, knowing they won't win, but the project wouldn't be able to keep up with the legal fees and would lose by default, unfortunately.

Is there anyway the Developer, Develop a UNIX version ? for us Nux users

The core is cross-platform, and so is the main GUI project (the Qt5 one), plus the ncurses UI (Toxic). Then there are a few platform-specific interfaces: Poison for OS X and the Aqua theme in particular, Toxicity for iOS and so on.

sorry to necro, but i noticed a screenshot of a really old version of Tox, and its the same one i got when i installed it from the repository of my linux distro.
you might wanna try the nightly builds, since they are at least updated..

i think it has potential

I uh.. s-sorta.. c-care.
I've been following this project for a while. As for minimalism, get nTox. should be easy to compile if you know what you're doing and can follow simple instructions with a compiler. You can also feel free to write your own client, as I'm sure you could come up with something nice. There are precompiled Toxic and Antox (Android Tox) builds.

As long as you caught the sarcasm.
Its good such projects are out there, glad to see people still care.
I get suprised faces for not being on facebook.

I almost never fail to see the humor or sarcasm on EZ lol
