This lets you know if a website is really down or if your just the only one who cant access it. No need to ask others "hey, hey, is the site down?"

There's a whole class of websites like this, but honestly they provide nothing that a standard ping couldn't.

What if its your network dropping packets? I don't think a standard ping might prove your desperation. Not sure what other way these guys use to be sure it really is down but it might take more than a standard ping.
