: Alternative Email Recommendations
: lucid December 02, 2013, 09:31:43 PM
Got any? For obvious reasons I don't want to use Google or Yahoo. I tried out mail.com because I thought it was cool that you can pick your own extension, but the site itself fucking sucks camel dicks. Pretty much every time I try and log in it fails because of "unknown technical issues" the first time, and usually works the second time. This last time it failed five times in a row, so as of 48 seconds ago I decided that wasn't the mail service for me..... or anyone.

Keep in mind, I'm not necessarily looking for anonymous emails. Just an email provider that doesn't allow NSA snooping or anything similar.

How about https://www.guerrillamail.com/ ?

Well sure, but that's a temporary email. I'm actually looking for an email that I would use with my actual identity(for jobs and whatnot). But I refuse to use yahoo or Google.

http://darkmail.info/

Not sure what the current status is but it seems quite a cool project, its aiming to be one of the most private/secure mailsystems around.
Its a follow up after lavabit and silentmail etc.
That is about the opposite of goo and yablow

Hmm that looks interesting. I'll definitely be looking more into this thanks for the link. I wonder if an employer would find it questionable that someone would use that type of email.

Have a cookie for your troubles. I'll give you one too Kulver because I don't want you to feel left out.

Yeah I have been looking for a new email service too, I use Hotmail and it blows. I didn't want to switch to gmail because I don't trust Google, and haven't for a long time. And then Yahoo had some big security issues recently, so that crossed them off of my list.

And you trust Microsoft more? I'd suggest using an e-mail service like the ones above for your everyday crap mail service. I really don't trust any "cloud" mail provider and expect anything to be public in my mail box :(

Just purchase a cheap offshore VPS and set up webmail on your domain.

Can you read? I said I am trying to leave Hotmail. I have had this hotmail account since I was like, a little kid, so most of my shit goes to it, but I am trying to switch.

This. It's not that hard to set up a smtps + imaps server. Webmail is optional for me.

Good idea vezzy + ca0s. Of course I'm a broke mother fucker. Even though I'm sure it's not that much money. Will look into this plus the darkmail thing. When does that become operational anyway.

5$/month for a cheap VPS, 15$/month dedicated.

Tried this, looked good, but as it turns out it fails to send pretty much every email, and also seems to have a hard time accepting. Which, needless to say, makes this pretty useless as an email service.

It's damn near impossible to find a secure email that actually works. Looks like I'll just have to go the VPS route.
: Re: Alternative Email Recommendations
: proxx January 21, 2014, 07:34:17 AM
Well I encountered no issue with it thus far.
Kinda like it actually.

You can send and receive emails successfully? Because people I would email wouldn't get my emails. It also took an extremely long time for me to receive them.

Not one fucking amon email service actually works for me..

vmail.me emails not working for me either.

Does anyone have any experience running SquirrelMail or Roundcube on a LAMP stack? There's a short guide to setting up Roundcube in LinuxFormat's The Hacker's Manual 2014 and it looks pretty interesting. I've been needing to set up a new email myself and it's frustrating not being able to find a decent alternative to the fascist corporate ones like microsoft, google et all.

On a LAMP , why so darn complicated, kiss it.
Just lookup zarafa.
Easy install + setup and a cute web interface.

The best one is hushmail

Hushmail uses industry standard algorithms as specified by the Open PGP Standard (RFC 2440) to ensure the security, privacy and authenticity of your email. We also protect all webmail traffic with HTTPS.

With Hushmail, all you need to remember is your passphrase. Hushmail takes care of everything else in the background. This seamless and transparent encryption process makes Hushmail one of the most user-friendly secure email solutions available.

When you send an email from Hushmail to another Hushmail member, we encrypt the contents of the email and deliver it to that member’s Inbox. When that member later opens the email it will automatically be decrypted.

When you send an email from Hushmail to someone who is using another email provider, you can choose to encrypt the contents of the email by typing a secret question and answer. The recipient must be able to answer that question in order to decrypt and read the email.

All of the underground scene groups have been using hushmail for YEARS. They've been around forever an encrypts all mail traffic.

I agree with this user. I recently just got into autistici and it's great so far. You should see if you can get in ;).

I'm located in the states and using Husmail for basic privacy at $35.00 a year is nice.
I've been with Hushmail for a long time and they're good enough for what I need them for.
Anything more "private" isn't going through an email anyway.
Another option is:  Countermail (https://countermail.com/?p=start)

Note that Hushmail _has_ gotten people screwed in the past (read :
:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/11/08/hushmail_court_orders/ ) simply further illustrating the fact that no one is gonna go to jail for you. Encrypt your shit and only ever send encrypted shit. That way any and all communication from that account is encrypted
Iirc they gave a private key to government officials on printed paper on a particular occasion.

Already mentioned:
- https://riseup.net/en (VPN + Email + XMPP + Lists + Pads; requires 2 invites or application)
- http://www.autistici.org/en/index.html (Great uptime, reliable servers, secure)

We provide a wide range of communication tools:

    Email
    Blogs
    Mailing lists, Newsletters and Forums
    Web Hosting
    Instant Messaging and Chat
    Anonimity Services and Personal VPNs

Note: Their VPN service is fast too but sometimes leaks DNS.

Not mentioned:

I use a secure forward service developed by Abine called Mask Me: https://www.abine.com/maskme/
Combine this with Autistici because Riseup is notoriously slow

Why not use some form of hard to guess text encryption, then use hushmail for sending. That way even if it was intercepted they would need to figure out your passphrase as well as what encryption you used

Just wanted to add this as well. A group of MIT students put it together as an NSA Proof email. Uses a 2 password authentication system, does not store or track user data, its free. I'm going to give it a try. You have to be on a desktop to set it up, or spoof your user agent on a phone or tablet for the initial setup
