Hello There,
Recently i burned 3 DVD's from an image file. But now, just after burning the last DVD,suddenly my laptop stopped recognizing CD's or DVD's anymore.i am a bit confused whether it's a hardware or software fault.
i am having Dell Laptop so i ran a Daignostics at boot time. But strangely it is not giving any problem. Also, the Device Manager too is not showing any error. On inserting a CD or DVD,no change appears on the CD drive in windows explorer,it just makes two noises and then nothing. From the noises,it seems that the CD is not spinning and therefore windows can't load it.
Note:On manually spinning the CD with hands and then quickly inserting it,the typical spinning sound that comes from the drive increases for 3-4 seconds as if it is now going to load.
What should i do now.Is there any solution other than repairing or replacing it??

Have you tried another system? Boot a liveCD and see.

Not with a liveCD,but i tried 4-5 different CD's and am getting the same problem.it stops spinning.

He ment trying to read a CD/DVD from another operating system. Just boot a live linux like OS from a usb stick and try to read a CD from that.
The issue maybe with the hardware, all I've heard about DVD writers in laptops is that they aren't reliable.

If he's able to boot the system from CD, he doesn't need to do further checks :D it's obvious his system is screwed somehow.

Did you boot ubuntu FROM the DVD drive or did you try to read a DVD from ubuntu?
If you can't boot from dvd then it probably is a hardware error. Try to spin a disk with your had and see if it gets stuck or not.
Or see if the motor got shafted away or something.

i actually tried to read a disk from ubuntu.and to my surprise if i spin it with hand and then quickly close the pan,it tries to spin it for 4 more seconds as if the cd is loading but as the revolving speed decreases and it fails.can you figure out the problem now?

Then the issue is in the writer.

See that motor at the bottom left? Open your writer and see if it's in place. If it's even slightly shafted away from place it might not be able to touch the disk and make it spin.
