Hey guys,
I want to buy an antivirus for my PC, it's running Windows 8 (soon to be 8.1)
I thought that windows defender was good until two days ago I downloaded AVG and Avast free versions and I found 2 trojans in an old torrent as well as medium severity infections. So now I want to buy a good antivirus that will protect me both online and offline.
Some requirements:
- reliable online protectiom that will detect onlinw threats
- Updated and reliable viruses definitions to detect all threats.
- Global reliability
- Not too expensive (not more than 100$ per year but the cheapest the better :p)
-
You could try Panda Internet protection. Although I never trusted those anti virus programmes. Most malwares exploits the antivirus software making them more dangerous. I always believed the same people who create viruses create the anti virus softwares. Its called need and demand in econimics.
-
Antiviruses are merely system hogs.

Maybe but I prefer to be hacked by ptofessionals than some skiddie with a torrent file.So I still want an antivirus

Go with Malwarebytes, then.

I have Malwarebytes, AdwCleaner, AVG and Avast all free should I upgrade Malwarebytes? I need online protection more than the actual anti virus for threats on my PC

I recommend Malwarebytes as well, am using it sometimes to scan my system occasionally, I don't any any AV running in the background.
Also https://evilzone.org/found-it-on-the-webs/malware-bytes-pro/
Just sayin'...

Just don't download shit from untrusted sources (so stop downloading cracked games and such), keep your system updated (obviously), use NoScript in Firefox to help prevent exploits, and always keep an image of the OS in a totally clean state (so just after you've installed drivers and updates) so that when you do get pwnd you can easily disinfect your system (unless it's written to the BIOS or something, but it's rare for malware to do that). You could also configure Windows Firewall.

Any skid can go to HackForums and buy an undetectable crypter for like £20.
Basically, don't rely on an AV to save you and always use common sense.

Okay thanks I usually don't get cracked games or content but I wanted Red Alert :p And thanks @Kulverstukas for the link to the post. But what made me rethink about malwarebytes is that AVG found the trojans altough Malwarebytes didin't. I'll still upgrade it but are a pro version of AVG or Avast good?

I did a quick research for you, and I ve found a very economical, reliable and up to date software for ya. Its from a russian company i think. Its called Kaspersky. If you want check it out. ;)
-
Oh god no. Kaspersky is such a memory hog, it's unbelievable. Trust me, I know, I work in IT and have to deal with Kaspersky every day.
-
Well then,i dont have any other suggestions. But i would suggest you scan it, find the virus yourself and delete it. You can do it without a scan though. Some viruses have special characteristics , and if you are familiar with them you can trace it manually and delete it yourself. Again, I am not the conspiracy kind of guy but DONT TRUST THE AV SOFTWARES. ;D

Thanks a lot for the effort.
But I tried Kaspersky before and it's definitely bad.
Anws thanks I really appreciate it.
I Think I'll keep going with Malwarebytes free and maybe upgrade AVG or Avast I'll see :)

Or you could learn how pros do it and save your money. After all its just common sense. If you are worried about infected cracks and keygens - use an online multiengine scanner like Jotti or Anubis. Have malwarebytes for scanning archives and larger files. The rest is just common sense you develop over time. While I got to this point I was infected numerous times... but eventually you learn to tell that something is fishy.

They don't have to. There are enough skidiots out there creating malware. Just look into the common "hacking" forums.

Worse than no protection is having lots of antivirus products. You should always have only one firewall, one antispyware and one antivirus program or the programs are detecting their counterparts as malicious. The antivirus scanners will compete for found detections, they might try to kill each other, which renders having them both less useful than just having one, and they will slow your system remarkably down.
Decide for one and deinstall the others.
Furthermore get some protection for your browser, at least:
* Web Of Trust
* NoScript
Deactivate Java plugins for your browser. You rarely need them and Java-Drive-Bys are really popular.
In case you use your browser to save passwords, set a masterpassword, or they are as good as plaintext for any stealer. If you do the same with your e-mail client, e.g., thunderbird: same here, set a masterpassword.
Or never save passwords with them.
Keep your programs up-to-date to have the most recent security patches, not allowing any malware to exploit them. You can use a Secunia PSI to check for outdated programs.
If you want to try a program that you downloaded and that seems fishy, set up a VM to use it. The VM is like a condom for sex. This is more safe than trusting your antivirus program (morning-after pill), virustotal (asking your partner if she has STI), or some automated sandbox analysis (coitus interruptus). The newest malware is always tailored not to be detected, your system might already be infected when your AV detects something, virustotal might not tell you the truth (heuristics are almost non-existant for the VT setup, these are not the AV settings you would have on your PC), and sandboxie might still let some malware slip through (there are enough anti-emulation tricks that malware employs, so one line of defense is never enough)---as you know one malware to infect you is already too much.
You can have a look at AV-Test (http://www.av-test.org/) to decide for one AV, or just take AVG or Avira and that's it. More important than the kind of AV is your behaviour. You are the weakest link.

Leading companies use it on ws and servers :)
At least its better than say norton, talking bout mem hog.

I like none of these :p
Is Eset NOD32 any good?

Well... yes... we use it as well on servers.

There is a free Bitdefender version with positive reviews, you can check it out at http://www.bitdefender.com/solutions/free.html
I never used it so can't say whether it's really good or not, but I will give it a try since I have to install an AV product for my family PC.
Through the years, I have used a combo of Kaspersky Antivirus + Comodo Firewall with IPS protection, and it worked for me, but it's true that Kaspersky is a resource eater, and you have to tweak things a bit if you want to use a combination effectively.
For web protection, Malwarebytes Pro offers that, although I've found it annoying and prone to false positives on some sites. I think a combination of addons like NoScript and common sense when browsing would be more useful than a security suite for web surfing.
There is also an anti-spyware program called Spybot Search and Destroy that performs what they call immunization on browsers to block malware infected sites, but the program is another resource hog, and I can't say how beneficial it really is. And as an aide, when I did a routine port scan against my system with Spybot installed, I discovered some of its services were listening for who knows what.
Just keep in mind that the antivirus solutions are far from perfect and could actually be used against your system. There was a very interesting paper I read about attacking AV programs that you can find here:

Might sound a bit crude but fuck AV's I don't want them , don't need them, don't run windows.
Either just run it on a VM or just don't go online with it and use osx or linux/bsd to browse the webs.
Only reason I could imagine is running cracked games, that case just run malware antibytes and besides who gives a shit if there is malware on it :P
Windows 8 lol, reminds me of ME edition.
