: Native English Speaker to look over Master Thesis
: Deque September 29, 2014, 11:41:50 AM
Hello EZ

I am almost done writing my master thesis about static malware analysis. I am looking for a native english speaker who is willing to read it for language-related corrections. If you have interest in malware analysis anyway, it might be an interesting read for you (or a horrible one, depending how bad my English is).
English is not my mothertongue and I don't have native speakers in my friend circle.

Tell me if you are interested. If you don't want to read 100 pages: It is already helpful, if you just read 10 or 20 or so.

Deque

I'm a native speaker and I'd say my English skills are pretty decent. If you want, I could take a look at it but it'd have to be later in the day since I'm a student during the weekdays. I should have free time when I return later in the day though so if you'd like me too just PM me it and I'll give the thesis a read. Seems like an interesting topic to go over (or at least a topic I've never looked into). If you don't want me in particular to go over it I understand and I hope to read the final version when it's all done.

It's clear, that you're too much influenced by the german language :P 'worst' --> 'wurst'. Correct term would've been, 'worse'.

@Deque, I'd love to take a look at it, but as you know, I'm not a native English speaker either.

Non-native speakers or anyone who is not that good in english can look at it nevertheless for other stuff like structure, layout, how understandable it is.
So, if you, RBA or Phage, want to look out for this stuff, you are in.

However, I really need someone who is good with the English language. For everything else I already have some people for proofreading.

@Rytiou
Thank you, I apprechiate your willingness to help me. But I don't know you, which makes me reluctant to trust you with my yet non-public thesis. Afterall, there is the possibility that people publish stuff from it before I do. In that case I would be screwed. Thank you nevertheless.

I'd have no gain in republishing it as I would have no idea what to do with it plus that would be a dick move to do tbh. I understand and it's too bad I couldn't even look over a snippet. Good luck finding someone you trust with the full thesis nonetheless.

A snippet would probably be alright, because useless for publishing. Mh. I could give you the conclusion chapter, when it is done, because that's a chapter no one ever looked at by now. But I still need a bit time to finish this particular chapter. Is it ok if I come back to you in a week or so?
I just don't know how much you will understand of it without the rest.
And yes, it would be a dick move, but some people are dicks. Sadly. Just look how many tutorials are copy & pasted without consent of the author. Same could happen to my thesis, if parts of it are just spread as blog post or tutorial. It is easy to do and easy to screw things up for me.

I will proof it. The majority of what I do in my English class is proofing papers so I am pretty good at it.

Me not being a native english preacher. You could also ask Turboborland on irc because he doesnt have an account here. You may also try asking Tunneetaan as he is more often on irc than forums. And then there's lucid... :P

That's cool. Just send it over when you're ready and I'll look at it.

Thank you, guys. The number of responses is amazing. I come back to you. Thinking about splitting the thesis up, so everyone gets a piece :P
No, it makes no sense to have a piece out of context.
I will PM probably two of you. Thank you very much.

@Geoff: Time-frame: I have to submit the thesis on 26. November. Defense will be in some time in December and after that it is public. However, we are also moving to another town which makes the available time sparse. Also: We must submit it as book, which means two weeks before submission I must be finished to have time for printing and binding the books. So it would be great to have any proofreading results until the beginning of November--a month left to read it.
Do you think this is enough time for you?

The thesis has 123 pages by now. 23 of them are content page, appendix, bibliography, list of listings, tables and figures. So 100 pages for the actual content.
One chapter is still missing and one is heavily in progress.

Don't worry. As I said it would be even ok if you just proofread 20 pages.
It won't rely entirely on you. I got so many positive responses that I have several potential native speakers now for proofreading the thesis regarding my use of the english language.
I will send you a link via PM. Thank you, Geoff.  :)

I hope by the time you decide to send out fliers, you will also send out a centralised system of reporting the errors. Like which page, paragraph, line, et-la.
Good luck,

To the ones who got my thesis: Did you already have a look into it?
I have changed and hopefully improved it a bit. If you didn't even start yet, I would like to give you the newest version.
Also: What is your impression?

I hope by the time you decide to send out fliers, you will also send out a centralised system of reporting the errors. Like which page, paragraph, line, et-la.

Actually, no. It is up to the persons correcting the thesis, how they do it and which way they send it to me.

If you would like, I can proof-read some of it as well. Additionally, I also studied your native language for 4 years, so I know common translation mistakes & your country's idioms and how to reword them to make sense in English.

It is the 4th November and I have only received criticism by good old Dr. m0rph for half of my thesis (thank you <3).
Although I sent it to probably five people, I got nothing else. I am a bit dissappointed. I didn't expect anyone to read the whole thesis, but after trusting you with my unfinished work, I expected at least a few pages.

I have now an abstract and a conclusion, which both really need to sound great, because they are usually read at first.
If there is anyone willing to proofread it this week, hit me up. The conclusion is only three pages.

The abstract is no secret, so I am going to post it just here:

The Portable Executable (PE) format is an architectural independent file format for 32 and 64-bit Windows operating systems. PE format related properties that violate conventions or the specification are called PE malformations. They can cause problems to any program that parses PE files, among others, crashes, refusal to read the file, extracting and displaying wrong information, and inability to parse certain structures. Malware authors use PE malformations to avoid or prolong malware analysis and evade detection by antivirus scanners.

This master thesis analyses PE malformations and presents robust PE parsing algorithms. A static analysis library for PE files named PortEx serves as example. The library is hardened successfully against 103275 PE malware samples and a collection of 269 malformed proof-of-concept files. PortEx is also used to extract statistical information about malicious and non-malicious files, including anomalies in the PE format. The author identifies 26 anomalies as possibly new properties for heuristic analysis.

I would have totally done this for you; I'm actually very good at writing and speaking. But when I first saw this thread, I thought it was too late and just passed it off.. Now I realize that I'm much too busy to help out anyways, I'm not even doing my own homework.

Send it to me any time, I'll check it out within the day I get it.
