: Laptop for pentesting
: Nancyevi October 22, 2014, 03:27:13 PM

I am looking to upgrade my notebook by month end.

I need this for pentesting, running various pentesting tools, few VM simultaneously so there is no lag during multitask.

Have seen few notebooks and finally came across recently launched Lenovo Y50,I am planning to go with it.

http://www.thedostore.com/ideapad-y5059-431090.html (http://www.thedostore.com/ideapad-y5059-431090.html)
4th Gen Intel® Core™ i7 4710 HQ, 8 GB RAM, HYBRID 1TB 5400RPM SSHD(8G), 15.6 FHD TN(SLIM), N15P-GX GDDR5 4G, Win8.1,2xUSB3.0, EXTERNAL 9.5MM DVD/RW

The only one downfall I see is that it has the graphics card which is almost waste for me,as a pentester I am not a serious gamer.

Any reviews on that, the machine itself or say its wifi?

Thanks :)

???  that laptop should be fine for pentesting. If you're looking to buy a tool specifically to pentest, may I suggest you look into the pwnieexpress line of tools?

If it will also serve as a laptop (or if he VM's are that important) then maybe you can find a use for that GPU hash cracking or similar.

And fuck Kali Linux. Build your own Distro with tools you'll actually use and not only will it be more lightweight, and more secure, but you'll also have an intimate knowledge of whats going on.

I only said use Kali because he seems to not have a massive amount of knowledge in the field, Kali is a great place to start before you can build your own...

No it's not. It takes like zero practice to install a new tool in a distro. If you can install the distro, you can most certainly also install tools on it.

Fair enough, just though it might be easier to get him started with a pre install.

Thanks for replying,In my case I will practice both kali and building own distro :)

Back to the notebook, yeah I got same response from many others that I can buy any laptop for pentesting, that's true but when you go ahead and actually invest money into it you tend to go for the real beast as you know it will be there with you for atleast next few years, you know how it goes.

I will actually want you guys to please go a bit deep into this, please put your valuable inputs,it would be appreciated by everyone in need.

Are you partitioning the drive or having the machine to be Linux only?

I would take the more sturdy professional laptops from lenovo http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/landingpage/business-and-home-office/

Will be running tipple boot of Win 8.1, ubuntu, and Kali. also a virtual box on the windows side with Kali on that for times when i don't need to reboot.

Thinkpad are good but will not get a 4th Gen Intel® Core™ i7 4710 HQ in that price, need to settle with i5 and much lower RAM.

as per the config. i see this as a beast, but still i am confused.

How much ram are you going to have? and so you're going to split the drive into 3 partitions?

Make sure the wireless card can be placed into Monitor mode  (would be surprised if it cant) also make sure it can me placed into 'Promiscuous mode' so you can sniff packets off the network.

Why....

... four OS installations, on one computer, two of which are Kali, and one of which is Ubuntu, which is basically kali without the buttloads of tools...?

Plz just dual boot windows 8.1 and kali if you're gonna do that. Install gnome if you really want.

Or better yet use a solid distro, that isn't bloated by systemd (read about it) (or is Arch) and makes you actually learn something. There was a great guide by vezzy in the OS section, read it before you poison your drive.

Dont use Windows 8.1, use Win7 or wait for Win10, also as already said, dual boot it with either Kali, a Distro or normal Ubuntu

Thanks for all your suggestions.

The notebook has i7 4710 HQ, 8 GB RAM, HYBRID 1TB 5400RPM SSHD(8G),N15P-GX GDDR5 4G

It comes with Win8.1,will make another 2 different partitions one for kali and third one for ubuntu/distro/etc(i would regularly format the 3rd partition to try out and learn new things)

As far as wireless card is concerned it can have either Realtek rtl8723be Or Qualcomm Atheros AR956x,as inquired,Lenovo is distributing anyone on the same model so can have either of the two, though not very much sure on how well are their performance, still digging out.

I appreciate all your efforts here.

See if you can get a SSD for boot performance... Personal preference though.
