: Tech Confessions?
: Pak_Track December 26, 2014, 03:57:58 PM
We've all screwed up at some point in our tech-lives, or have a deep dark secret, such as, using Internet Explorer for some time.
I thought it would be fun to get them off of our chests.
Mine:
-I used IE7 for a period of 2 years, when I was little
-I once set a hard drive on fire, still haven't figured out how.
-I once set a PSU on fire, still haven't figured out how.
-I actually thought Windows Vista looked good when it came out
-I was once afraid of downloading anything for fear of viruses. Even a fucking Shockwave Player.
The best:
-I once got scared because my PC shut down due to an overheat, I started shutting it off, every 10 minutes and allowing it to cool down. I ended up damaging the motherboard, but thankfully, it was in warranty.

-In the days of dial up modems I once spent 48 hours downloading a direct download pirated iso of Windows XP. Never used it as double clicking the iso didn't work for some reason.
-Around the same time I downloaded Back orifice Sub7, and ran server.exe. Didn't get why nothing happened.
-I used to program in Visual Basic.
-I once made a "encrypter" in Visual Basic that just substituted each character in a plaintext with a random choice of 6 different 10 digit numbers. I thought I was a badass and had invented an uncrackable code.
-I have infected more windows machines than I care to remember by installing cracked software.
-I once accidently 'rm -rf /' as root. I have no idea what happened I think I was typing too fast.
-I completely bricked my parents Windows 98 machine by trying to install DirectX so I could play a game. It was the only PC in my house and they used it for work.

That's all I can think of for now but I will edit when I remember more. (There must be more)

Those are hard to remember... but I burned 2 flash drives when assembling a new computer - I mixed the wires for front USB port and when I wanted to boot from a flash drive, it got really hot and didn't boot :P thought it was a faulty flash drive, so I tried again. After second attempt I took a look at the wires and facedesk'd myself kek.

Gonna update when I'll remember more.

-I have started crying when verification link for facebook didn't work  :-[
-My first "hacking":
Mother has pasword protected the PC so me and my brother wouldn't play games all night long...so we just had to break the password somehow ofc..
First we scribbled the A4 paper with pencils and placed it under the keyboard and we thought when she pressed the something on the keyboard it would leave the trace and we would unscramble the result to get the password, we tried it and it worked ^^
but unfortunately we didn't turn on the PC and when she tried to type the password nothing has showed on the screen and we were busted...damn she has beaten the shit out of us  :'(

p.s. sorry for bad english  :-\

Lol,
one time I made a Perl script that had a really bad & probably endless loop in it, within seconds my hard drive was making loud TAK TAK TAK noises so I quickly shut it down. When rebooting I discovered it melted my dual screen into one big screen -.- . I was unable to undo it.

Another time I managed to kill our only (windows) pc by doing a hard shutdown while it was booting. I was too uneducated at the time to repair it :/

Also one time I somehow managed to switch the kernels of my slackware & ubuntu effectively breaking my computer. My awesome tech nephew had to come fix it.

Ooh, this seems fun, so I'll add some of my own moments of glory;

-For a VERY long time I honestly thought IE7 was the best browser in the world and that's why it's Window's default browser. Being the best OS and all.
- I think I was four - I had recently heard that human bodies could be electronic conductors, and one day when my dad pulled our computer out of the plug for some reason, I crawled under the desk, grabbed the end of the cable and tried to stick my pinkie into the plug. Thankfully someone caught me before I could kill myself.
- When I was 11-ish, I thought I could be Mark Zuckerburg by learning HTML. Only. I also thought I was an uber h4xor 'cause I knew what 'OS' was. No joke.
-Didn't set anything on fire, but I once DoS-ed myself. I still don't know how I pulled that one off in particular.

On a side note, I once did that 'rm -rf /' thing too cause I saw it someplace and "wanted to see what it did". Thankfully, I didn't have the user permissions to do so, so no harm was done.

@Geoff The 3rd and 4th ones are actually pretty cool.
The 2nd reminded me, I salvaged the fan from the PSU, and used it to ventilate a cardboard home I built for my cat :P He never even went in.

I got a few from back when I knew jack shit. And why I say I got lucky with some of my newbie fuckups :)

1.) Learn about keyloggers, want to try one out, download some random one off some site, run it(somehow managed to configure it properly) and walked away from the home computer. Cue later that afternoon dad hops on, 'hey what the fuck is this trojan.w32.blah?'. I look at the screen and voila antivirus caught the keylogger I downloaded. Lied out my ass and said 'I dont know but antivirus caught it so it should be fine in quarantine.' It worked, and later that night I hopped on and let antivirus have an exception for the logger. Worked smoothly for several months.

2.) Speaking of dad, one night I had just learned about network scanning. Thought Id try it out and decided to start off with a ~50,000 host random nmap scan with the works. Figure Id check in on it morning time, so I minimized it(didn't know about nmaps output options at the time). Not only did Dad get to it first, open up the windows, he actually googled the damn thing. Ensue huge rage fest as my dad only saw it as a 'hacker' tool. Didn't help that some airliners got caught in said random scan(oh boy did he browse through my results) and my dad worked as a civilian contractor for a naval base. You try explaining how hacking can be good when youre still basically a skid and barely know the ethics behind the industry to justify yourself :P

3.) Learn a bit about mitm(theme going on here eh?) and decide to try it out...at my local library. I waltz in, sit down at one of tables reserved for laptop users, log on to the wifi, then proceeded to fire up ettercap's gui. What happened next was 30 sweaty minutes as I try in vain to repair the network as the entire library internet access, even the desktops on the LAN, is entirely borked to all hell and back. Library workers are running around trying to fix everything, users are complaining, and I'm sitting there, noticing the camera pointed in my direction for the first time ever. Somehow managed to reverse my damage and stayed for an extra ten minutes to not look suspiciously frantic.

Here is a few dark secrets of that I can remember:
This is only a few of the many stupid things I have done.

How is it possible to install any USB F/Panel connectors wrongly? I mean, it's just, far out.
It's possible if you mix the + and - wires, then apparently the polarity flips and that's how you fry a flash drive :P

Edit: here's some more

* Back in the days when floppies were used for data transfer, I grabbed a copy of Sub7, infecting myself several times in the process and having to listen to lectures from my dad how this is hacking and how this is illegal, I eventually made a working server.exe and copied that onto a floppy. Being overly excited I told my friend about it and we decided to go infect the local library to keylog Runescape passwords. That didn't work because the librarian would always take a look at my screen, so after like half-hour of being nervous like hell I just walked out.

* Back when Runescape had simple graphics and was actually awesome, I used to play it with my friends day and night.

* When I got my first computer and TurboPascal was introduced very briefly in school, I started learning it on my own, knowing of no other programming languages then. I got the basics down and was able to code much better than any of my classmates and I felt so awesome, so l33t you can say :D
: Re: Tech Confessions?
: Kulverstukas December 27, 2014, 08:32:01 PM
Disclaimer: All of my stories are from the days when I knew jack shit about any of this.

* I once ripped out a NiMh battery pack from a toy car that had no charger, found a loose USB cable somewhere and thought I could make that battery pack charge. I spun the wires together (according to color) and plugged it in. What happened next was a short circuit and I almost fried a motherboard lol.
: Re: Tech Confessions?
: Pak_Track December 27, 2014, 08:32:35 PM
I wrapped the four cables around each other inside the USB cable and created a cable that turned any computer once plugged in. I shortened the cable and had a small USB that would cut the power of any machine it was plugged into.
Pics or it didn't happen.

Now, none of our secrets are current. I thought I'd start.

I'm still using a CRT Monitor and PS/2 membrane keyboard. (The keyboard is somewhat awesome)

Sounds like an Etherkiller (http://www.fiftythree.org/etherkiller/) :P

I rarely write unit tests. I know I should and it would make troubleshooting easier but I can never be bothered to.
I only use 4 or so fingers for typing. My coordination is awful.
I used to despise GNU/Linux as a desktop OS because I considered it clunky and half-baked. This opinion was based on my experience with default XFCE on Debian.

Guess I told this before. Sure I did a lot of stupid things but this was the worse. When I just started out as a network consultant I was at a company that got a new iSCSI network consisting out of 4 HP Procurve switches. They had a HP storage system which caused problems and for this reason, they ordered a storage professional to fix their issues. While the storage professional tried to do his job he blamed the network for being the reason of the problem (Its always the networks fault.) The guy changed something on the switch configuration and suddenly the network crashed. They unplugged one of the four switches and everything was good again. The storage problems weren't fixed but at least the network was up again and the storage professional said, the switch would be broken and as soon as they have a working one everything should be good. I didn't know anything about the story when I was ordered to check the defective switch. So I went there, checked the switch and as you may have guessed, the switch was working like a charm. The customer asked me if he could plug it back in and I, without thinking about it too much, said yes, sure.. go ahead. After the switch was online again the network broke immediately and none of the 300+ employees was able to work anymore. I will never forget that feeling. Was close to a heart attack. We unplugged the switch again and it took me more than 1 hour to restore all services. Since this day I know what a broadcast storm can do in a virtualized environment. It takes down all machines cause they can't see their boot and data volumnes on the storage anymore. Its like you would pull out all hdds from a running server :) After everthing was restored I had a closer look at all switches in that iSCSI network and found out that the idiot of a storage professional disabled spanning-tree on one of these switches. What can I say.. the company never ever asked for me again :P

Another one I just remembered:
My laptop recently broke down. * Whenever I find/get a memory medium (flash or hard drive), first thing I do is try to recovery anything that is possible to recover. Got some really juicy stuff that way.
* I used to buy used hard drives at the flea market for cents so I could recover something from those and possibly get something valuable.
* Found a flash drive on the street, it was ran over with a car. I assembled it and it still worked (however prolonged data storage on it tends to corrupt some files, good for data transfer tho...) and I recovered around 8 gigs of private photos and other data and it only was a 4 gb flash drive.

Confession bear anyone?

@pak_track on the PSU--uhh they sometimes do that for a variety of reasons, but unless you installed the powercord backwards(which would require a hammer) or flipped the voltage switch on it then its not on you :P

anyway lets see good gaffs huh? Damn i have a "recent" one lets start with it:
-while installing slackware i hit a prompt(after instillation) that i thought was asking me for a password, as i didnt remember setting one, i though i had fubar'ed the install and so reinstalled it not realizing thats not what the prompt was until after i got back to the same point. oops.

-on one of my old laptops i couldnt figure out why it kept crashing, i checked EVERYTHING. While talking to a fellow IT about it he goes "have you checked to see if its overheating?" *facepalm*

-once while i was swimming at my parents house i needed to make a bunch of phone calls to set up a party. So i got out, proceed to call everyone and set it up, then got back in the pool. Roughly a half hour later i go to get out and i hear this weird screeching sound from my pocket. Evidently cellphones dont like chlorinated water.

-While building a monster machine for someone, i ordered a beast of a CPU heatsink/fan that fit every processor...except the one that was in his system.

im sure i have more but these are whats on my mind atm i guess.

* When I was introduced to computers, I learned that batch was some command line voodoo stuff and tried to do something at home. Created a fork bomb and thought it was godlike. Shown it to my friends and they wowed at it so we tried to sent it over to some of the friends through skype and see their reactions.

* Used to be a heavy Runescape player.

* When a desktop computer was powered on, I pulled the box out from under the table to insert a mouse plug and saw the switch on the PSU that said 110V, the switch was set on 220V. Without thinking twice I slew the switch and the PSU produced fireworks with a lot of smoke.

Oh wow. Way too many to list. I sure have enjoyed the provided stories thus far though.

* When I was around 12, I would port scan hundreds of subnets at a time from my home AOL Dial-up and go to sleep, thinking I was like Matthew Broderick from Wargames trying to find 'Protovision'.

* I downloaded several 'Punters' back in the day for AIM, and 'punted' friends off-line. One kids parents came to my house demanding I 'broke' their computer.

* I convinced all of my friends that 'Server.exe' will open port 27374 and/or 37331 on their machines to connect them to a new wealth of porn. Needless to say, I infected myself in the process, lol.

* I bought the first edition of 'Hacking Exposed' when I was 13 years old, and was reading about arbitrary code, and race conditions, before I even knew what UNIX was. Needless to say,  17 years later, I am still a big fan of this series of books and authors.

* I have had more microsoft windows woes as a kid, between all of my batch file writing, deleting autoexec.bat, thinking it was a 'virus'. I once got my membership to the boys and girls club removed for "breaking" all the computers lol.

* I once wrote a windows .NET "HELLO !" message in High School, and it went to every machine in the building.

* In 8th Grade, I saw the computer had it's IP Address written down right on it ! Imagine that ! I even remember it. It began with a 10.0.0.0 range. I was very upset that this machine would not even respond to a ping from my house though ? I was pretty discouraged.

In closing,

Let's just say today, my mistakes are at a much higher capacity.  8)

My list is endless
1. When I was really young (4-5 years old) me and my dad(who doesn't speak English), we were trying to start a game for hours(2-3 don't remember) at all my mum come home and start it for us.
2. When I was about 8-9 years old I decided that I'm hacker, downloaded VB 2006 and stared crawing the web for topic such us "vb 06 malware", "vb 06 worm" of course I didn't know what a for loop is but I was downloading source codes and modifing them and for some reason I always fucked up the OS installation, for that time I thought that those who can reinstall Windows are the best hackers on the world, sadly soon I understood that my mom can do it too(after she tryed to use the PC).
3.When I've find the BIOS I set password to it, I was unable to remove it.
4. I've used IE until 2008(could you imagine this ??? )
5. I tried to infect somebody via skype somebody from USA don't remember his name I think he was pedo anyway I didn't know that AVs detect trojans nor what a port is, useless to say that I failed.
6.Before 5 years I tried to hack the skype of my girlfriend, I tried to guess the password of the mail used to create skype, sadly the mail was by her mother and I blocked the mail for 48 hours (too many login attempts)=D
there are many more

I can't believe I forgot this. I hope it's okay to post again.
A long-ish time ago when I was still a newb and relatively lacking in the general hacking knowledge department, I ended up crushing on a girl in class and seeing as I had no chance as the girl was 10000000000% straight, I give up. Friend ****somehow**** convinces me to dox her into running a trojan on her laptop (I did it because I thought it would be kinda funny) and I did (exe disguised as pdf with the name "DONT OPEN THIS" on a usb and gave it to her, asking her to give me as many Supernatural episodes as possible).
It worked. Figuring it was an invasion of privacy though, I left it alone. Mostly. I didn't get rid of it "just in case". (I'm not a stalker, okay?)
One day I overhear my principal complaining about how her internet has become seriously slow and everything is just slowing down in her pc and I automatically assume it was the trojan I sent out.
Aaaand back then, I didn't use proxies, I thought she'd somehow find out about it and track my IP, send me to court and thus jail, so what do I do? I spend all the money I saved up for a new wireless card, two new hard drives and a new ISP and for 6 months after that, whenever my principal so much as called my name, I jumped. At some point, she thought I was smuggling drugs because I was acting so suspicious. Oh, and I burned that usb.
Those were dark, dark days.
: Re: Tech Confessions?
: Pak_Track January 05, 2015, 07:28:01 PM
That shit is awesome. And naming the file, "DONT OPEN THIS" was pure genius, I'll definitely try it.
And that was quite a coincidence, too :P
You could've just phoned your ISP, and requested a new IP, although, it doesn't really 'trace' you.

This happened to me yesterday:
I was messing with my router and accidentally turned off it's wireless capability. The thing was, on that particular router, wifi turned off immediately, without any reboot, or so much as save :P Now, the ethernet port on my laptop wasn't working, and I didn't know about this. I thought something was wrong with the cable, so I ripped my house apart looking for other cables. I found two more. Tried them, shit didn't happen. At long last, I remembered that I could move the router to the desktop, and that the DSL cable didn't really need to be plugged in. I connected it and fixed shit. I took about 6 hours, though :P

I was even considering moving my desk out of the room and to the router :P

Okay, well here is my confession.

When I worked as a computer tech. I would fix computers for all types of life, school girls to VA hospital techs.
One day I was working on a girls computer and I came across a lot of porn, of her, so I saved it. I felt so perverted I gave it to my boss and all he had to say was damn shes hot. LOL

Also, one day my uncle brought me 3 school computers that a university left on side of the road. I found out they were college, or at least fraternity computers. I ran a hand full of snooping files on these computers, I came across a girls email and password through some old sites, I mean like haven't been used in 10 years. Long story short, she used same password still, and email for her facebook. Lets say she does not know it, but I have access to her tax, school, and every aspect of her life.

I have quite a few, but here are the most interesting ones:

I learned how to torrent movies in 6th grade, and I continued to torrent a lot of crap thinking the "hide my ass proxy" would protect me, until my freshman year in high school when I learned the truth.....I should have known better, but also I think our ISP couldn't care less  ;D

*Not entirely my fault, the second story:

Same high school, my sophomore year, where I NOW KNOW a bit more with computers, we all had to pay tuition for the first time (well, the parents paid) for school laptops for everyone and the new computer/programming courses.  Well, that year I was asked to volunteer for the tech-help desk by the programming teacher, mostly just to teach the tech hungry freshman how to do basic stuff like connecting to the student network, connecting to wireless printers and the classic "my computer is slow" issues, I've practically made them IT slaves, but I got bored, and made the mistake of showing them what BIOS in Windows can do (nothing that can do any REAL damage i supposed).  It's their second week and I just go to grab a quick snack and talk to a few friends in the cafeteria for a few minutes, when I return 10 minutes later, the freshman are factory wiping someone's laptop, (this was a big no no at the time since all of the lappys had Microsoft office, the entire adobe package, and VNC) "what are you doing?!?!?" "someone dropped it off and said it had a virus on the desktop, so we clicked on it and a bunch of terminals kept popping up! so we shut it down and we factory reset it just to be safe!"  :(  the facepalm level was above 9000, the freshman were later terminated from the help desk, and I had to re-install all the crap onto the kid's computer.  It's even worse that they were suspended at the end of the year  from having their laptops because they then tried to take down the school network using cmd...apparently I "inspired" them to search a crap load of Youtube how-to's on cmd crap.....

Someone brought a laptop into the shop for fixing, apparently it wouldn't charge, we tried five chargers and none worked. I took it to pieces to see if any of the connections were damaged or faulty.

So I then plugged it back in (Still in pieces) so I could try and test the voltage to see if it was receiving the power, I had set up the meter wrong and and sparks went flying with a small plume of smoke following close behind.

Panicking I put the whole thing together without saying anything, I pressed the power button and I was bemused.

It worked.
