: Where/what to practice ?
: 6u1Zm0 February 12, 2015, 04:00:56 PM
Hi EvilCommunity :)
As mentionned in my signature, I'm beginner in Hacking and execpt a successful phishing made to friends in PHP and few javascripts used to hack a forumactif, I haven't done anything.

Do you have some generic exercice for beginners you could propose ? What would be the first technique to develop ?
I know that if I install Kali I'll be able to use few software and quickly hack some stuff, but that'd be too buttonpushing for me, I'd prefer to get into hacking by actually really understand how things work.

So what would be your "basics" every noob in hacking should practice ?
Thanks for your help.

Which one is the best for a beginner like me ? Should I try them both ?

In my opinion it doesn't matter too much, they are very similar in their missions. I discovered HTS first, so I did the missions there first.

There's Damm Vulnerable Web App, there's hackthissite.net, there's overthewire and vulnhub and like a thousand diff sites and apps. I'd post a link to ctf's official list of wargaming sites meant for training (small compendium of good links) but I'm too lazy to post it for you.
Seriously, did you even google "hacking practice"?
Aaanyways the best for a newb would be HTS or OTW. Vulnhub's boxes are nice too - try them after you can't get any farther in HTS or whatever.

That's why I wanted to ask you, as you seem to be a pretty skilled community.

Thisislegal.com
overthewire.org/wargames/

Those are two great places to start, its for beginners all the way to some-what advanced users! They provide challenges that are difficult but force you learn if you dont know. This is legal is a lot of web exploits, not many downloads needed except for the the occasional firefox add-on (firebug, tamper data, ect). I also recommend DVWA if you have a place to set it up, great source!
