: What is your opinion on gaming laptops?
: Sneaky February 16, 2015, 07:30:47 AM
So I'm thinking about purchasing a gaming platform, I am hoping to build a gaming PC however I hate how much space it takes and I already have several PCs that I use for work (will not upgrade them). So I'm strongly considering a gaming laptop but they are so overpriced for the specs they offer, it's ridiculous. People tell me they're not worth the money and with time they just end up overheating. Plus upgrading a gaming laptop can be a pain in the ass.

So what are your thoughts on gaming laptops?

I'm a hardcore console user all the way baby! currently have x360 and I'm very happy about it.
As far gaming as laptops go, yeah you're right about the upgrading part. However IME ASUS X550 series are fit for about any kind of gaming... nowadays we reached a point where laptops are just as powerful and stock desktops, so it's really a question if you'll want to upgrade the specs often to please your self-esteem.
If not then why the fuck even buy a laptop? just get a console and don't bother with questions like "oh shit will my computer run this crap?".

Gaming laptops are just not worth it, laptops are for portability when in doupt just go for a build.

My main problem is that I travel a lot and something portable would be nice. Maybe miniATX instead of an ATX?

Just get an Xbox one or ps4, seriously... They're portable and have every major title, as well as some exclusives that aren't on PC. HOWEVER if there is a PC game that's not on consoles (say you're really into indie games) they go with what you like. It's all subjective to your personal preference. A gaming laptop is just not a good buy due to being unable to upgrade (with the exception of RAM and hard drive) that will only take you so far. Project Christine from RAZR is pretty badass though.

Or you can just say fuck it and get an ASUS ROG G20AJ slim design full power as well as portable

I game exclusively on PC, and I spent a shit ton on my computer so I can run anything. However that's the problem with laptops, they can't run AAA crazy graphic titles unless you turn the settings way down.

A gaming laptop is a fools purchase imo. For what you spend on a mid-grade gaming laptop you could build a small pc that is more powerful, will run cooler, and as an added bonus, can be upgraded as time goes on.

Hell, if you really need portability buy a cheap laptop and build a pc for home.

For laptops I like ASUS's ROG Series:

But as you said, upgrading is a thing, laptops can stay relevant for about 3 years if it's quality... but you should expect to update again by the end of that lifespan.

I've never experienced overheating with mine... but then again If you're running at max cap 24/7... well you can only get so much out of a laptop. That said, you may want to invest in a good warranty in the case that you do fry something.

That said, If you're a hardcore gamer you probably want to invest in a desktop tower for expand-ability and ease of repair.
