I just remembered this article. And I was thinking that would be quite good device for sabotaging something. Maybe someone knows something more about such things and maybe even used something like this ? Or it's just some random bs ?

Going through the comments there could yield a great deal of insight on this. I visit hackaday daily, and a lot of the times I'll read the comment section more than what was posted. More than a few very knowledgeable people post there often.

No one said it was worthless, it's new here so there's something.

As for the post itself, the internals of computers do have the usb hubs/stacks locked down as hard as Chinese parts will allow them, but even the diodes and silicon they could throw at it have a breakdown voltage. Like in the post you link to you'll need to bypass them to actually fry anything.

As a person such as myself, the only limit here is the delivery, as in what is going to hold the power source. You could do a makeshift reverse joule thief, but it wont supply the voltage needed. The best bet, at leas on a budget is use capacitors, the ones found in disposable cameras. Maybe not a usb drive, but outfit the shell of an external hdd with a few 330V capacitors in series, rigged to blow with power and you got something grand.

Could be as simple as an npn running to a mosfet running to an opto or something that could handle it and built for suicide on opisite power rails, then maybe even you could fry the lipos dem blow up with some special handing lelz).

But then we digress into some handbooks meant for anarchistic reasons, even if we bring it into the 21st centry. No, we should stick with HackADay, seep it's wisdom and deviate only when needed.

To add though, switching high volt/current things should use a relay or ssr (solid state relay). MOSFETS and such would be slow and couldn't handle shit if you went the capacitor route.

But, it seems no one cares as much so I wont draw up any schematics in eagle or nothing. It is a good subject though, I like the hardware stuff.

Not only for laptops, if I would be more experienced in electronics, I would do this by myself. It's going to be available to buy in deep web soon.

I will change my perspective on the components though. Instead of MOSFETs I and else others should opt for SSRs (solid state relays) for switching high current/power/voltage things. They are heavily used in coil guns and in carefully timed loads. If SSR's aren't your thing, use a regular relay. With current enough to blow batteries. you'll need something stronger than transistors.

Then again, your only looking to bypass the breakdown voltage in the protection diodes saving the USB port, I would say anything over 8 or so volts would fry most things, Mac computers being the first to go. since they are the most cheaply built.

with a 3.1/USB-C you should remove the worry of slow charge rate especially if using supercapacitors. That is unless im missing something obvious....
