: Hacking Printer to Print only Black
: PhantomFartJokes July 06, 2015, 05:38:14 PM
I have an HP-T120 DesignJet printer, and it's built in such a way that, you can not change it's preferences to black-- this is an obvious ploy to persuade you into purchasing the superior printer they offer, which does allow you the option of only using the black cartridge while excluding CMY. The cost of replacing CMY cartridges when I don't use them at all, is rather too pricey and unpractical for me, or anyone else. I've looked all around and have found various methods used to bypass this corporate Wall Street... Wall, pun intended, however they have failed to help.

Wheres theres a "will" theres a way, so wether through hardware or software (or a little of both, as I suspect) I am determined to figure this out, as it would definitely save many people a lot of money who use this printer or others like it in a small business environment. I screen print, so I only print photo positives that require only black ink. And if you think I should call customer support, I don't want to hear your thoughts at all. Thanks Guys and Gals.

Wait what exactly do you need help with? Forcing a printer to create completely black pages?

Um... cant you just pull out the color cartridges?

Pretty expensive printer you got there. I would think that if you could afford it, you should be able to afford the cartridges.

Sometimes vulnerability scanners such as nessus will cause printers to print black pages until it runs out of ink or paper.

Assuming you're using windows, you'd need to write a virtual printer driver that converts every page sent to it to grayscale and then forwards the result to the real printer.
If you don't have any experience in programming (esp low-level), you'd be better off converting the images you want to print to grayscale manually...

Looks like this does exactly that:

Show me evidence , I am skeptical about this.

Lol what? Could you provide a link or information backing this up pls.

I can't find the link where I originally saw it, however here is another link about it: https://discussions.tenable.com/thread/1333 (https://discussions.tenable.com/thread/1333)

That isnt remotely close to what you stated, I call bullshit.

@proxx I said i couldn't find the original link. This is as close to my claim as I could find in 5 minutes of searching. Call bullshit if you want, but I assure you that I did not fabricate a lie to answer that question.

This is most likely what Trogdor is looking for:

Some network printers indeed will print a lot of pages (either blank or containing random data) when connected to on some ports. We maintain a list of printers and the normal modus operandi for Nessus is to detect whether the remote host is a printer, and will skip it if it's detected as such.

Recommending this to OP is like saying, sometimes you can go out rummaging through 5th dimensional feces and find a winning lottery ticket.

Thank you 0E 800. Though, I started out my post with 'sometimes' so that OP didn't immediately try my semi-difficult to replicate recommendation without first reading more replies. I just thought it would be more productive to post something that might work rather than decide not to post anything at all because it sounds far-fetched.

The link you were referring to was about network printers printing garbage when scanned over the network, while OP's
question was about printing without using non-black ink. As you can see, the only connection is in the word "printer". Moreover, this just derailed the thread instead of helping OP, who isn't returning it seems.

Back on topic:
Removing the ink cartridges will most likely not work, since the printer will probably complain about it. And even converting
to greyscale might not always help, since some printers partly replace black ink by a mixture of the other colors to make the colors more "deep". This feature can be disabled (if present). And of course, most printers give you the option to print any image in greyscale, so you might be able to save those settings permanently.

EDIT:
I just noticed that OP can't make the printer use greyscale output. In this specific case you'd need to convert the images,
although I somehow doubt that a modern printer doesn't have such a simple feature.
Further googling brought up that it is a known issue on other HP printers as well. (http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Other-Printing-Questions/Can-t-print-black-and-white-with-empty-color-cartridge/td-p/389091)
Due to the way the printing heads on Inkjet printers are constructed, they need to be filled with ink to prevent clogging etc.

TL;DR:
Get a laser printer if you only need to print documents, the cartridges last much longer and it will certainly be possible to print in B&W.

i dont know much about printers to be honest, but wouldnt this be as simple as converting the picture to b/w in photoshop or w.e and then printing?.. i dont see why the printer would use the colors cartridge to print a b/w picture... but then again i dont really know shit about this, thats why i havent commented... just wondering..

I had the same problem  my printer wound print if I was out of a certain color or ink what I did was I added electrical tape to the bottom of the ink cartridges except the black one and that made the printer think that they were full so I continue printing like normal.
