Heya everyone,
I am going to upgrade/setup my old macbook pro 13' (2012) for learning programming and probably start learning hacking skills. I am pretty much going to use this primarily for the said things as I have a separate Alienware 15 (the new one...yes) for everything else. So back to the mac...based on experience how much space do you think I should be buying (replacing the hd with a ssd). Will 250gb be enough? Everything is bloody expensive in straya :(

well space is not an issue, unless u want to download huge 50GB dumps size is to much of a problem and u could put all pictures/movies/huge files etc.. on an external HD. So yes 250GB is appropriate.

That depends on what you want to do. But generally speaking, I'd recommend using Linux since
it is IMO a better / more suitable environment for programming. On the other hand, many code on
Macs. And considering that learning to use and understand Linux is a valuable knowledge, as well
as a great pleasure, I'd strongly recommend it. ;)
A last word on Linux distributions: this post (https://evilzone.org/operating-system/an-informal-guide-to-linux-distributions-for-the-unwashed-hacker/) is a very valuable resource on what to choose and what to avoid. And maybe you
want to take a look at the systemd vs. F*CK SYSTEMD debate.

Thanks for the link mate. It was damn funny ;D and also educating at the same time. Going with Slackware (I understand it's not for newbies but I love challenging myself). Cheers.

IMHO, sell the Alienware and use the money to build a rig, use the spare money to mod the macbook.
Alienwares tend to break down easily/ their heavy and overall just annoyingly big.
Granted they have good components half the time, you'd be better off with a seperate PC and your Macbook
