: ADVICE REQUIRED: Leeked Documents and the Law
: th31nitiate July 23, 2015, 05:28:01 PM
Hey guy's,

I've recently started following the new's, in relation to security and document leek's after i spent some time in the Deep web exploring some of the site's down there. I saw some interesting stuff in relation information pertaining to a specific organisation i want to work for in the future. The information wasn't any thing too bad, but just information relating to how what they look for, and how they ranking in relation to skills. The document also mentioned some of the exciting stuff that takes place at said organisation. It was really interesting and i got a little buzz, because few month's ago i asked them for this information(To help guide my development for them) but they wouldn't give it to me luckily i just happen to stumble upon them.

Now my question and advice required is that am i in the wrong for looking at these docs, as in have broken the law for doing so and can they kick down my door for this ?

I want was hoping info that covers both UK(mainly) and USA ?

So you just read leaked documents that were published in deep web ? Dont worry you are fine otherwise everyone that ever read some document from Wikileaks would be in trouble.

Hmmm i was thinking the samething, i just wanted to make sure, going forward whether it's ok or not. I remember reading somewhere on google that if you are from uk it's ok and if your from USA it's not really ok but its not that much of a big deal.

Irregardless i think there is going to be some interesting stuff taking place in the coming future after what happened to hacking team. Apparently there is new source code that's been released for a super cool android malware. I think people will take it and cook up there own variations of it. Its called RCSAndroid.

This is an ethics issue, not a legal issue

What I mean is you are feeling that it is wrong because of where you stand morally. You're asking for advice to validate if its OK to do so legally. Leaked documents are that. There was a breach, it got out there. There's no coming back, its done. However you feel its morally wrong which shows your moral compass feels that it's wrong. This is your own ethics. You are second guessing yourself because you feel like you have an advantage over others who may not have discovered the leak. There is nothing wrong with that legally speaking, but it could eat at you because of high morals. Depending on the type of person you are this can hinder your ability because you obtained information pertaining to this organization that you plan on using to your advantage. Is it illegal? No. Is it ethically wrong, maybe. Hence why I said it's not a legal issue, but an issue of ethics.

Hmmm ok that's great, i weren't too sure what you meant by ethic's.

I guess  i feel better now since the advice is coming from someone of your level and rep, it means it can be trusted.

I don't think there's a problem with it. You could even host it on upload.evilzone.org

The word to focus on here is "Authorization"

If you feel/know that you do not have authorization to access what you are accessing, and are blatantly doing so, that's a crime in the eyes of the law.

This page (https://ilt.eff.org/index.php/Computer_Fraud_and_Abuse_Act_%28CFAA%29) will help you out in knowing what you can and cant do.
