My wife's laptop runs win7, I tried to do an upgrade to 10 but it says that I need to install SP1 which it has. It also has an issue with its updates. Any suggestions welcome.

Back up all your important shit (pics, music, etc.) to an external drive. Reinstall fresh windows 10 from usb.

Does she really need Windows 10?
Does the laptop have drivers for windows 10?
Is the laptop BIOS or UEFI?
All these things need to be considered prior to going to Windows 10.
Oh, and are the specs for the laptop decent enough - I hope it has an SSD at least!

I have installed Windows 10 on WinXP hardware and still got much better performance.
Mostly issues with sleep/suspend or having to use Microsoft basic drivers for video. Not an issue if you all you do is surf the web and use iTunes or type up a resume.
If you don't like it, then reinstall Windows 7 or 8 and your computer will still run like it did when you first purchased it, maybe even better.
Since your going to be formatting your hard drive anyways, after installing Windows go and install Linux in dual-boot. If your interested in having more knowledge about computers (figure you are since you signed up on the forum) this would be the best first step forward (installing Linux).
Just becoming comfortable with installing operating systems and partitioning hard drives is a good solid platform to begin with. You will have the confidence in knowing how to start from scratch when you think you royally fucked up. There is no brick.

Hahahha, when I fix a girl's computer, I sometimes check the browser history for porn, and find websites even I find too hardcore, it's funny. Probably not my best trait, but I keep it for myself at least.
And let her try windows 10 before using it, she might find it hideous, as many people do. Personally, I don't think it's ready, I'm going to go back to windows 8 soon.

Windows 10 will let you revert back if you need to.

As if Windows7 is not usable anymore...

Probably because its free. If people had to pay $200 to upgrade they wouldn't even care..
Win 7 is great. I still see people using XP :o
@ OP , You might have to keep running the updates a few times. Unless you want to try and force the install.

I also thinks same and I use win7 for my windows stuff, no problem though and I don't really see a need to use 10 but as people's thinking, take even shit if it is free then have it. ;)

Win7 is great, but I find Win8 to run slightly better, plus I really liked the new start menu :$
I thought that MS will continue their trend of improvements with Win10, but nope. Plus the upgrade instead of a clean install, what a mess.
But using XP is just stupid IMAO.

I still run win7 and i am never gonna upgrade cos i never really use it for anything that much. I like it and no one talk to me about win8 and above.

Win 10 ?? Ohh no man. I have it and it's the worst OS.... Don't change win 7 for win 10....... It doesn't worth it...

Currently on a Macbook and I don't think I can go back to windows unless necessary. Work still uses windows 7 and is quite a workhorse to be honest.
My brother has Windows 10 on his new laptop and while for me it's okay it's quite a learning curve coming from 7.

I upgraded from win 7 professional to win 10 pro today. Officially drivers for 10 for my laptop 5520 15r doesn't exist but everything works and no unrecognised hardware. Probably adopted from win 7. Only problem i had when i selected updates for windows 7 that update center dissected. So i was in endless loop of retarting restoring and failing updates. So i restored my win 7 and let update center select updates. Updated and restarted few tinemes then i upgraded to 10. Scared about drivers i used option to to keep files and apps (i only had chrome and img burn). After few restarts my windows 10 booted without any issues. Win 10 folder was about 20 gb and win.old folder(win7) about 30 wich means that win 10 needs less space. About resources as i can see 10 is slightly faster than my restored win 7 was. So i think you can upgrade just dont delete windows.old folder cause you need it to be able to downgrade in first month if needed.

Yea windows 10 is kinda a nightmare for some upgrades but after everything is working and turn off all the spy/cloud crap it's actually not bad (backward compatibility seems very broken vs win 7 backwards compatibility FYI)
