: [HELP] Recommend Antivirus for Windows 8.1
: th3g00n December 07, 2015, 09:18:34 PM
I know this is old cliche, but I got a new computer and would like a recommendation for an antivirus. It's been a while since I used Windows so I'm kinda lost.

*FOR THE PENGUIN BIGOTS
I plan to install a Linux partition later so calm the fuck down.

I used to use the Kaspersky solutions.

Pretty neat interface, KES database is pretty up to speed on the latest malware etc. I would go for that if I were you.

I suggest downloading this ISO and loading it on your computer:
http://mirror.rackspace.com/archlinux/iso/2015.12.01/archlinux-2015.12.01-dual.iso

Burn that to disk or use something like Rufus to put it on a bootable USB

Follow lifehackers guide to get it set up:
http://lifehacker.com/5680453/build-a-killer-customized-arch-linux-installation-and-learn-all-about-linux-in-the-process

After that guide, feel free to look through little tips and tricks I came across here:
https://evilzone.org/operating-system/so-i-installed-arch/

Then Install virtualbox and qt4. You can follow it in the WIKI here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VirtualBox

Load Windows within the virtualbox and put on ESET or Kasperky or Avira and profit

I've used Kaspersky AV for a long time and I always liked it. But then I switched to a free AV and chose Microsoft Security Essentials.

Kaspersky is by far the best AV solution

The bottom line: Popular security-software maker Kaspersky Lab has close ties to Russian military and intelligence officials.

Why would you use AV from a country that is not your own?

MS Security Essentials is a joke. At work we use Eset, pretty nice AV. Used to have kaspersky, but it's a damn memory hog. Free AVs give you a load of shit along with the program. I used to be a big fan of Malwarebytes, until they raped the interface and riddled it with huge buttons.
There were malwarebytes keys posted in here somewhere, I used some to get premium access :P

Common Sense 2016. Plus on all my servers (I have twelve), there are detection, intrusion and prevention systems in place. The frequent email updates I get for reports can be more annoying than Nancy Grace but eh.. the price I'm willing to pay for a secure network.

I'm not a big fan of AV software in general...

It's just to easy to use some generic crypting software and get a 0/58 on a 58/58 virus.  Generally I've opted for DEP and I have a service that kills any process not in my white list.  It's a nuisance, but at least everything I run is stuff I know about.  The only things that run without being in my white list is executable  files signed by trusted parties.

I have more faith that the digital signatures are accurate than I do that an AV would pick up a virus.

I personally like Avira free. Good detection rate and not loaded with bullshit

My personal favorites are Hitman Pro and Malware Bytes. Other anti-virus act more like a virus, I find.
