We're all here to become better hackers/programmers/tech geeks and grow in a community. It's really neat seeing how far technology has come and how advanced some of you are. But we had to start somewhere!
Who or what inspired you into technology? What pitfalls have you experienced?
When I was 8 years old, 24 came out. Chloe O'Brian was my hero. Even though at the time I was interested in being a biologist (then later an artist, then back to a biologist in early high school) the whole concept of hacking really stuck with me. And I learned it as hobby, and soon saw it was a lot more complicated than on TV, but that just drove me more. The complexity makes it worth learning, and my inspiration turned from the media to life. But you never forget your roots! Pitfalls though.... Parents were always concerned with how much time I was spending on the computer. I was a very well rounded kid, but I feel I would have had a lot more success if I'd had more opportunity to practice. Now it's time to catch up for the career field!
-
When I was 8 years old, my father introduced me to electricity. He taught me a lot about it. That was the time where I got general interest in technology. Additionally, I was (and still am) addicted to video games. I played them whenever I could. But I had to play on my sisters Laptop, because I didn't own a computer. She was annoyed by that and put a password on it. I asked Google about ways to bypass it and even found one.
I was so statisfied by this super 1337 hack that I got more interest in hacking and computers in general.
Well, and now I'm here. Still a stupid skid that tries to learn more and more about it.
-
Ever since i was a kid, i just wanted to be a computer wizard... and fucking hack pokemon.
-
My grandfather, he have learned me so much. When I was 6, he showed me how to use the pc. At age of 13, I started doing hacking challenges with an adult who helps me.
-
I want to learn things that aren't common knowledge for other people. I know some things about computers, but I don't know a lot about how they work and what you can do to exploit it. This is where hacking comes in. Knowing what to do to get into a network, using the vulnerabilities that are supposed to be secure. Knowing how you can enter a computer without having the right login and password. Retrieving deleted files,....
It is very difficult to know everything. I thought it was impossible, but some guys on Evilzone already inspired me this may be possible, when I read their posts on different subjects. Some of you guys are really deep into the computer knowledge thing. That's a really nice thing.
I once read a quote that comes to this. You will never know as much as the person who taught you all you know. Because that person will also become smarter, if he wants to evidently.
-
My inspiration came from a screwdriver which I stole from my grandpa when I was about 6. It allowed me dissamble my toys and look inside. The dynamos, gears, bulbs and how they work together was very interesting to me. Soon every single toy that I owned were "screwless".
Then one day my mother bought a computer pre-installed with windows XP. I did not dare opening the CPU since I got so many warnings not to do so. There was no one to teach me how to use a computer so I was messing around with it. Uninstalling softwares here and there, and installing others. The computer ended up with many viruses which I did not understand then. The computer had to be reformatted many times over by the seller which was kinda covered by the guarantee. Nobody kept me from messing with the computer so I continued to do so and unknowingly I was teaching myself how to use a computer. Then the internet came ...
-
When I was kid my father always would bring me Toys . After playing them for few days I always try to open them and look how they worked from Inside. Electronic Toys always intrigued me . When I was in 5th grade I was Introduced to Computer , From that Day It was dream to do something great with computers

It's cool that a few of you have roots in taking things apart and putting them back together! Was anyone driven especially by puzzles or puzzle games?
-
I've always been interesting in math and science, but in all honesty, my main motivating factor has been my perpetual loneliness.

I disagree. Lonelyness, no matter in what form, is a key aspect. In fact, I would count that as a motivation for myself (although the details are yet to be discovered).
-
I have cystic acne, im a faggot, and I am creepy. I aint getting shit IRL.
-
Growing up poor having to fix my things when they broke instead of buying new. Dad was a mechanic kinda instilled into me it's not that hard to open it up and figure out how it works. Got into computers and gaming as a teenager. By proxy that brought on pirating and hacking video games. So yeah being poor.

Some of the best progress mankind has experienced has occurred in isolation. I personally don't feel what people describe as conventional "loneliness", maybe because I keep a lot of reptiles. But I personally do way better alone than in a group. So I agree that loneliness is key sometimes
My motivation is because i want to look cool. I also want to be like my hero 4chan and anonymous. Naw, but on the real, I have cystic acne, im a faggot, and I am creepy. I aint getting shit IRL.
I have a dermatologist in the family and I was a test monkey for a drug called Acutane. Check it out. Literally kills your skins ability to make cystic acne. Even if you ain't trying to fit in it can help prevent facial infections and other problems later on. Cystic acne is a pain in the arse, I got lucky and they caught it before it really started to eat my skin. But it ain't the end of the world either
Staff note: no double posting pl0x!

Thanks for the advice. It really does not pain me to much, but I guess it would not hurt to try. Though I looked it up, and the side effects seem a little scary. :-\

Since a very young age I'd always had this fascination with computers. I used to take a part my steering wheel for my pc and put it back together (at the age of 6). But it wasn't until 2011 that I got into programming. I'd always expressed an interest in programming, and finally one day my father came to me with a project of a calculator in VB.net, he printed out all of the source code onto paper, and told me to fuck around with it until I was satisfied. And I did.
From there I snowballed and started learning a lot about web development, then I moved onto Java and a few scripting languages such as Ruby, Perl and Python.
I just get such excitement out of Computer Programming that I don't get from anything else. (Don't tell my girlfriend that hehe)
Cheers

What inpired me?
You know that feeling of pure satisfaction, when you look at a mechanism and understand how it works?
That unique feeling, which is something in between of admiration of someone's genius that built the device and realization of your own power/ability to understand it, to twitch it for your own needs, and by doing it leaving your own mark?
I wanted and still want to understand the black boxes and black fog around me, which is made up by different devices, computers and networks (specially Internet). For me it is like magic, and smart ones out there are the super-powerfull-benders ;D
AND I WANT TO BE PART OF THEM with every cell of my being.
*Lol, didn't think that I would get so emotional*

lol, yeah, I have a friend that uses Acutane. Getting the permission to use that stuff is intense xD She had to be on birth control and had to give a ton of blood so they could test her for a bunch of various diseases and conditions and shit. Apparently, it could also cause depression, so you need to have a psychological evaluation too. But yeah, I'm guessing it will be easier for you because you are a dude :P

instead i m trying to get into computer business!

I have always enjoyed computers, and most likely will for the rest of my life. At the age of 2 I was better at computers than many of the teachers at kindergarden, and I've kept going into that direction...
What inspired me to get into the huge section of hacking was most likely something I read on the news about a huge hack done, I can't really remember as it was a long time ago. But something in that direction
I also have a huge desire to learn things, in pretty much every category. And well hacking could also be a stop on the way to achieve that "goal"

It all started with gaming i guess, i love playing the Playstation and sega so much since i was 7, i will always find a way to cheat, that's how it all started, finding a way to cheat and win my friends since we always place a bet when we play games, like slapping the losers hand, or face, very serious slap that sometimes leads to a fight (we started the slap thing when i was about 12), i used to play with guys older than me, there's this guy i remember, his Nickname is "Charlie one eye" he used to be badass (still badass since I've never won him before considering how strong i am in mortal kombat armageddon) so, this is not a gaming thread but a what inspired you thread, but gaming really played a huge role in my life, from then on i started looking for loopholes in games, then i got interested in programming and hacking and web development and stuffs... As to what inspired me? Gaming did... [emoji4]

Might sound word but computers inspired me, I was fascinated by them from a young age, I thought deeply about everything that went on such as why is my character moving because I pressed "Up"?. These questions eventually led me to programming which further lead me to Hacking.
-
This is kinda weird, but I was inspired by Jason is the Foxtrot comics.
-
I first learned about programming at the age of around 10 or so when parents bought me a computer. I dreamed of creating my own games then, but true inspiration came from the book "Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution" by Steven Levy
-
As a child, I wanted to know how everything worked. I was always taking apart electronics (and my mom's small kitchen appliances) to figure out how they worked and put them back together. When I was a teenager, my friends and I got our own PCs and spent most of our free time overclocking and modding. After awhile I began to get bored with hardware, so I turned to programming.
-
I've always been pretty heavily exposed to computers. My dad got into computation back before personal computers and used to program in COBOL, (he's currently a sysadmin for United Launch Alliance) so, I just sort of grew up with it.
Started fucking with them pretty much as soon as I was capable of full coherent functioning and at a pretty early age I used to find ways inside my parents computer (by sheer force of curiosity and tinkering with shit, I guess.) Didn't do much of anything, just sort of moved things around, deleted files, created files, and generally fucked shit up, but that sort of got the ball rolling.
At around 12 my dad got me a copy of RHEL and a book on C that was very much not geared towards someone my age and left me to my own devices with it. Absolutely loved it; learned how to work the terminal and started doing absolutely everything I could through it while I was learning to code. Enjoyed the fuck out of that for a while, but at some point it fell off. Really wish I'd stuck with it then. But the spark has very much been rekindled.
Recently came across a piece of code I wrote back then... It's pretty horrible, but I was 12 and only had about 6 chapters of C under my belt with no other experience. Just over 1000 lines, all in a single gigantic function. Hah....

Hehe
Not really tho. I was definitely worse than my teachers in MANY things (reading, talking etc.) But I could still fix things they couldn't on the computer due to what I learned at home. And sure I had no fucking clue on what I was doing. I mean I was 2 years old and I could not even spell my own name. But clicking the "Next" and "Yes I agree to the terms of usage" buttons is not so hard to do. As a 2 year old I just saw it as the same things dad did on the computer at home when he installed programs. The situation I'm talking about at the moment was when the teachers were gonna install a new game on the computer at the kindergarden, but they didn't succed. I asked them politely if I could try and I installed it succesfully. Now I did phrase myself wrong when I said I was better than them at computers, but I di have certain skills that made me perform and complete certain tasks that they could not do, and in my opinion that they should have completed quite easily due to their knowledge in comparison to my knowledge at that age.

My uncle has always worked with electronics, earliest memory I have of him is fixing up a radio. I always looked up to him and grew up wanting to get into electronics, when I was 12 I built a Linux server, then at 14 I hacked a cable modem, but I had to start working so I left it all behind until recently again I found myself reading book after book on exploits and next thing you know I'm downloading a book on reverse engineering and another one on Malware Analysis and taking on a Cryptology Class online. I can go a full day just trying to understand why and how code affects a machine the way it does
-
I am curious about Computers and technology since i got my first Computer at the age of 10. I really fascinated me how Computers work and now i am looking forward to sudy Computer Science.

I was always in front of the pc cause when I was young I hadn't much friends and I got bullied at school. Later on it was more like learning new things rather than playing video games. I was much interested in how things work and what I could do in a more deeper way. And so on. I'm still the tech-guy in my class. I mean in my highschool.
-
Was given a commodore 64 for christmas aged 8 - i spent most of that year learning BASIC rather than playing the bundled games ! From there progressed onto Atari ST, and finally a big PC - never looked back!
-
I was inspired from all the hacking movies i saw during all those years.
-
I also started taking things apart and putting them back together again. My father is a mechanic and also knew how to put cable boxes together so I had access to a lot of tools. I also went to a day camp where we learned how to solder and also about computers. Later on in high school me and one of my brothers would stay in the computer lab and just mess around with HTML. I also do love puzzles as my favorite game is ocarina of time.

Good to know I am not the only old fart on here, nothing like typing hundreds of lines of code to recreate Pong on a 5.25" floppy.
I think my interest began with the original War games and continued from there. I have always enjoyed taking things apart and learning how they worked, which seems to be a common symptom amongst several others here.

For me it was when I first got my first computer at a young age. Bday present from my parents. :) They figured a computer would be a good way to feed my extreme curiosity in all things. This was early/mid nineties
Manually trying to open every single file inside it to see what's in it. Sometimes editing files to see what would happen and then figuring out why it would happen. Fucking up the OS more than once obviously.. This was way before there were proper search engines :D Went to the local (nearest) library to rent some books about computers / operating systems. The entire library had like a single shelf with some old computer related books, most of them written in English. From here I 'borrowed' an 'Encarta' encyclopedia on CD to read and explore. Also, the OS on my computer was configured in English so I had to get myself an English to <native language> dictionary and tried to decipher all the words that were used.
So yeah, I'd say my parents gave my first inspiration.
After a while I found out my neighbor was quite handy with computers, he introduced me to batch file scripting in Windows. Awesome :D
