Hi guys, this is the first time I ask for help after a quite a long time and I kinda feel like a noob again.So I have an "problem", I study at the Polytechnic of Milan Informatics Engineering and I usually use their fast connection for downloading.Less than a month ago I used to download with a minimum speed of 800kb/s and right now it's limited to 150kb/s max.I think they put on an extra filter to limit the download speed.Up speed is like 500kb/s max.Is there any way to get past those filters?The second issue that I have is that I can't make SIP calls.Calls by Skype using their monthly sub work just fine, but since with the new SIP provider I have a free Italian phone plus free calls to landlines in many countries including Italy I would prefer to use that and have skype for an emergency.I don't have any knowledge on such matters just yet so if someone could help me out here it would be very much appreciated , if not at least could you give me some advice on reading material about this kind of stuff?I tried with a google search but apparently I did not use the correct keywords ,cause to tell you the truth I don't really know what to look for.

Well there is no sense in that because they put the filters in the first place,my goal is to bypass them.

Well the max is 3 or 4 mb/s, but that is not my problem I am ok with just 800kb/s stable, I need though to unblock the limit.I found a way about the SIP calls and software(VPN or SSH) but I am still stuck on the speed limit.For the DL limit I do not think is a filter, it must be something else.A friend suggested to try and get info from the packages I receive.

try a network topology and will talk afterwards , a and take a look at your gateway

my connections speed is 115.2 kb/s.. :(
on to that downloading speed is 20 kb/s.. :'(

well i think they have set bandwidth limit on access list. and you are probabaly in that list.
you can remove your name from that list if you can get access on gateway router.

Thnx for the ideas guys.Doing those things though is not gonna be easy cause the only time I am at uni is when I go to lectures.
I will figure out a way eventually.

Well if it actually works that way and I remove myself from the access list ,will I be able to have internet at all?The thing is we login to the network by
using our uni credentials so if I remove myself from the access list(I mean my acc from the access list),will I be unable to login at the hotspot?

its not that, you are not removing your account from database.
list i am talking about is diffrent one. it could be ruled by firewall or may be on router.
so first you have to figure out from where is rule made. then remove your entry from that rule list. thats all.
one more thing.. there may be other list of people who can access with full speed.
so if you got their username and passsword then you can use it with full speed also.

Or you pay for your own internet connection, and don't leech stuff at university. Universities often sniff their network, and if you use it for leeching, you will get into trouble faster, than you can say pizza.

The connections don't get any better than that around here. I live several miles from the nearest exchange.

I live in a residence where the Internet is even worse... >:( I guess I will have to buy a usb thingy that connects me through a mobile carrier to the internet and pay muuuuch more than I am already paying!About the uni sniffing us,let me tell you Italians could not care less about piracy,even the uni has some software "bought" the "italian way."I am from Naples so believe it does not get much worse...

Find a friend who has it and try it out. It may be even slower than your current internet. Mobile speed isn't bad but the latency is.

search for the gateway or one of the DNS , than use some scanning tool and provide us some intel , usualy gateway's limit the bandwide , but lately i have seen dns servers dooing it and ,it might be your autentification server as welll
