Just wondering what distros are you running from your USB Flash disks, and why.
I have tried Damn Small Linux (fast, minimalistic, but too weird and unusuall for my taste), Puppy Linux (fits me perfectly) and Ubuntu (too slow and too bloated for a portable OS).
So, what do you use as your portable OS and why?

I have BT5 for "dirty" stuff. Why? Isn't it obvious?
and PuppyLinux because it's small, has lots of tools, loads fast, runs completely from ram (flashdrive is completely free and is detected like a flashdrive, not like an FS), supports persistence and is very light and fast.
Puppy is just perfect to carry around in a flashdrive.

There are many different Linux distributions I've used on my USB,I don't have an official distro. I prefer trying different distros, I've used the following (Mint,Ubuntu,Kubuntu,Fedora,Fuduntu,Slax,Porteus,PureOS,CentOS,PCLinuxOS,Sabayon,ZorinOS) that's all I can remember? I don't use Small sized Linux distributions, because they are crappy and have a shitty GUI.
Why I use Portable OS ?
I think the best answer is "To feel the beauty and diversity of Linux"

Minimal install of Ubuntu for everything.

Mint debian, and i keep loving it :D

Slitaz Linux is the best imho for portable USB :)

I just tried Slitaz 3 and 4RC versions. Have to say that it isn't better than Puppy - Slitaz looks nicer than puppy, that's for sure, that is pretty much it.
Puppy has much much much more tools, better compatibility (?), supports persistence.
Slitaz loads fast, has much less tools and 3rd version had a too fast mouse pointer (in 4th version that seems to be fixed) and does not support persistence.
I don't know what did you see in Slitaz that it makes it better for you, but Puppy wins this one.

I "prefare" CrunchBang. Because it's fast (very fast imo), Debian based and frankly because I'm used to it. :)
You should give it a try.

Slitaz is very lightweight, has portable with persistent changes usb stick installation, can run in RAM and you can install a lot of programs with tazpkg package manager.
Also: "SliTaz 3.0 has around 2300 packages in the database. A wide variety of packages have been commited and the Tazpkg package manager can now convert deb/rpm/arch/slackware/ipk packages to Slitaz native format (.tazpkg)."

I quote, I have used CrunchBang before BackBox and it's damn fast, aslo on my cheap netbook. ;D It uses Openbox and thunar.
