: How do you stay anonymous?
: lucid March 24, 2012, 08:01:28 AM
So my question is, what kind of precautions do the good people of this forum take when trying to surf anonymously? Tor? Proxy hopping? SSH? VPN? Open VPN over Tor? Tor followed by SSH?..........Slirp?

I mostly use SSL where possible. I don't really do so illegal stuff that I have to browse with a proxy all the time :P

Well sir, perhaps you should change the title of the thread and name it "How to achieve anonymity" and put it in the general section. With a poll if you like, I think this is an important topic.

Topic mess already taken care of.

On-topic: I am with Kulverstukas, I use whatever my browser/the page I am visiting got to offer and only if it is easy to use. But if I really need to gear up I use private single proxies or chains.

Open networks perhaps?

VPN and SSL. I stopped using VPN's a while ago but for the SSL I have a Firefox add-one called HTTPS finder, always helpful when you need it.

Ugh, how does SSL make one anonymous?

It works like a private channel or tunnel.

It works like a private channel or tunnel.

He obviously knows that. But it dosent make you anonymous, only protects you slightly from sniffing.

Who says you can be 100% anonymous in the first place? Nothing makes you anonymous in the sense that nobody and no government agency of any kind can not know about your online activities. Therefore, SSL can be considered a form of anonymity since it achieves a small security measure.

AFAIK, SSL provides cyphered connections and "ensures" origin and destination's identity. No anonymity. I understand anonymity as hiding your real identity, aka, IP.
In addition, you never know if the CA has been secretly pwned (Komodo, DigiNotar...), or governments have judicial access to root certs, so, in my opinion, can't really trust it. But hey, it is what SSL is about: giving anothers that responsability.

Anonymity is about hiding your details/information, not just the IP.

So perhaps I should change the poll so that SSL isn't an "anonymity" option
