: My new toy I just ordered
: iTpHo3NiX February 23, 2011, 09:30:35 AM
Well I love wireless security, but I always hated the limited range. So I decided to get one of these puppies:

http://www.dealextreme.com/p/2000mw-high-power-802-11b-g-54mbps-usb-2-0-wireless-network-dongle-with-dual-high-gain-antenna-44929 (http://www.dealextreme.com/p/2000mw-high-power-802-11b-g-54mbps-usb-2-0-wireless-network-dongle-with-dual-high-gain-antenna-44929)

I'm sure its not a true 2000mw, but its a hell of a lot more powerful then what I have now. The chipset supports injection and monitor mode. I can't wait to try it out and see what kind of networks I can pick up. Possibly start my venture into WPA/WPA2 cracking without bruteforcing (turn it into an AP and have the users connect to me) maybe also try out some MitM attacks. I'll keep you updated and let you know how pleased/displeased in this item ;)

Hmm, looks neat. I might order one aswell ;D Awaiting feedback :)

Yeah once the device ships... lol I expect it to take another few weeks, the last time I ordered from deal extreme it took about 3 weeks. I will share what range I get on my laptop (Not sure which one at the moment, but I do know its Atheros chipset), then my Linksys WUSB54GC Dongle (my previous wifi cracking wifi card), and then this guy. Then you guys can see the difference and see if its something you'd want to get :P

You should be careful with this dongle. If it's really 2000mW you might want to keep it as far as possible from you or just power it down. After all that's the same frequency as in your microwave oven. I don't think you want to boil your eyes or balls lol.

BTW:
I have this dongle:
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/high-power-1000mw-802-11b-g-54mbps-usb-2-0-wifi-wireless-network-dongle-35405 (http://www.dealextreme.com/p/high-power-1000mw-802-11b-g-54mbps-usb-2-0-wifi-wireless-network-dongle-35405)

And it works really well with the aircrack-ng suite (same chipset).

mW is for power not frequency, it isnt any more dangerous than a cell phone

If you want some killer range try a parabolic dish mod (http://www.engadget.com/2005/11/15/how-to-build-a-wifi-biquad-dish-antenna/). I've been dying to do this but I can't get a hold of a satellite dish.

That's the one I was looking at first, however I thought the one I got looked a little more well built (we'll see) As I said I highly doubt it will get 2000mW but hey I figure for the $20 why not give it a try.

Not as good of a range as I was expecting... Might get some new antennas that should do the trick. The device works and works good. Has a great wifi chip. Pretty well built. Much smaller then I thought it would be as well which isn't a bad thing... Built with good plastic. Good device, just need better antennas for a better range. However compared to my laptops atheros card, the ones that it picks up does have a stronger power then those from my laptop.

A different antenna should help a lot. I borrowed a USB wifi dongle a while ago and the range was garbage. I swapped the antenna for one off my router and then the range was great.

switch antenna helps
but don't forget that the device itself has to supply a that antenna power, which may not be enough to be 100% effective,
though I'm not sure how must these things supply there antenna's with power so it might me useless what im saying :D
: Re: My new toy I just ordered
: iTpHo3NiX March 11, 2011, 09:51:53 PM
yeah I was thinking swapping them with my routers antennas or heading down to frys and picking up some 10-20dbi antennas for it and make it a BEAST :blum: We'll see

Looks like a decent dongle, especially for the price. One question, why is it showing fewer networks that your old card?

mW is for power not frequency...

Do you really think I don't know that? What I'm trying to say is that WiFi operates at almost the same frequency (2.4GHz) as a microwave oven (~2.45GHz). Of course the microwave oven is using much more power ~500-1500W.

...it isnt any more dangerous than a cell phone

In this case that's not true. The most cell phones currently can operate from 850MHz to 1.9GHz. The the peak power of which is ~2W but the average power is ~250mW. A WiFi dongle with a peak power of 2W depending of the data rate can have an average power of ~1.5W. So it's more dangerous.

Maybe you should try to put it on your roof.. :P .?... Not kidding...just put in a weather proof container...and see what you get. I use a ALFA w/ realtek chipset and I was amazed at the range I got from just buying an extended USB cable, running it out my window and putting it on my roof (something so simple)...I was able to deauth and capture handshakes from over a block away  8) .

@iTpHo3NiX

I use other aproach when stealing neighboures net,i use Air Live AP with good antena turned into Universal Reapeater,so i can place my laptop on any place in house with cheap integreted wireless card till AP is somewhere on my windows always connected on someone outside. If neighboure use WEP my AP also use same WEP pass,so i protect it wit MAC list alowing only my laptop to connect on AP....chain of free net :)

Laptop ---------> AP repeater --------------> neighboure AP
