I heard avast is pretty good, you might also want to check out avg. I check spoofee almost daily and from time to time I see them giving away registered copies of avast and avg.

Been using Avast for 2 years now, nice and simple interface and keeps my windows secure.

@OP: No 2 letter posts please.
Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/) is very good as scantime AV.

Avast is the best choice.
-
Avira first, Avast comes second. Also as a precautionary measure use portable security tools
-
I personally like Avira, it is very unobtrusive. AVG was too flashy for me. Also make sure you have Malwarebytes or some equivalent.

You all are recommending Avast but I thought that Avast antivirus is a lagging indicator because it is free. I heard zonealarm is one good one.

Not everything that has a price tag is better than a free alternative.

this is because you've always downloaded stuff from Trustful websites, Avast is the most silliest Antivirus, it is very much easier to bypass.
In my view Panda Antivirus is the best because it doesn't even allow the process 'wscript.exe' to be run while Avast don't even bother to see what is happening inside the VBScript code
