I just read this:
http://thehackernews.com/2012/05/windows-8-operating-system-will-ban.html
I don't know if this will be a real problem in the future for windows 8 users, but I don't think it will.
Because first, I don't see how it would be possible to just not allow a program in an operating system like Windows. A substitute for said program would just appear or something.
Second, this is just stupid and unthinkable!
So what do you think about this?
-
I am using chrome and firefox on windows 8 :)

LOL. Still, I think the news talks about the release for June and not the preview. It is the preview you are using right?

good good, I wish they did it sooner, lol.... it will be good for linux users...
EDIT : WHAT THE FUCK! I read the article and it says no x86 apps? what do they mean no x86 apps?

Yah, but i bet this is somekind of legal tryout, or promotion.

Yeh, it seems that way. Even if it's close source and all Windows as always allowed development in a fairly open way, or at least as open as one would expect from such software. Because of this, banning other browsers now would just be ridicules.
This news may die in a few days and no one will remember it in June when the first release on Windows 8 comes out.
-
They want to turn us all into IE users, duh.

Yeh, like the article says.
And again, by todays standarts, that is also very strange. In almost any system that as wifi you can download other browsers. It makes no sense to restrict an OS to just one browser.

It does make sense, think about all the data they may collect from IE exclusively run, the only reason IE is popular is because most regular users don't even know that there are alternatives and it comes installed......
My ISP's website can be exclusively opened from IE only... tried everything I could think of but it will only open in IE....

Hum, interesting. I actually never thought that an ISP website would only open with IE.
About the data part, it does make sense yes. But wouldn't there be other ways to collect data in such a way that doesn't have anything to do with the browser?

yeah it seems forced, the part till login opens but later part refuses to open, tried to open with user agent changed but still no success.
about data,
not exactly, what you CAN collect with browser = all activities performed + programs installed + websites visited+etc,etc,etc.... just about everything.
by other means one can only collect data if you visit their sites/ sites with your ads on it/sniff data.......... or have some spyware installed, if a program not meant to send data sends data it raises all sorts of red flags....
Browsers can do anything and they can be
"updated" (read instructed in advanced spying).... you can just add more "features" anytime you wish....
the data sent is encrypted and there is no way to view it... use a good encryption and you get unbreakable protection against reversing it..
Lets not forget the default search engine...
FF = google
chrome = google
IE = bing (right?)
most people won't change search engines from the search bar. FF provides a drop-down, IE has only one option in its dropdown when it installs, more can be added though...

Very good point. I didn't think of that but that makes sense considering that Bing = Microsoft. They have been trying to make Bing the new Google and I fucking hate Bing, and Microsoft. They will probably send Microsoft Assassins to blackbag me after saying this.
-
Wow Microsoft is seeking yet again to dominate the browser market.that isn't very wise. isn't that how they got sued 1998? either way it sure is good to be a Linux user ;D
-
The question is : How are they going to block FF/other browser?
I mean they can't block .exe from running without their authorization, right?
how exactly will they stop other browsers?

very paranoid and cynical, p_2001 approves

I also thought about this. I have no idea how this would be done. Assuming an OS is going to block a program, maybe they will do it by comparing the .exe of firefox and chrome with an .exe in the system. But the comparing part alone is already a pretty dumb one.
Maybe they will block a program that connects to the Internet and at the same time is firefox or chrome, but that is also very dumb and not very safe.
-
this would make programing a lot harder if it was true still not convinced allthough microsoft not explaining this is kinda suspicious. all and all time to go to a dif os.
-
This is obviously a misunderstanding or false rumors. Even tho Microsoft is Microsoft. They wouldn't be allowed to do this by law. This sounds like a good ol' trololol.
@p_2001: Don't be so paranoid. If IE or other browsers starts sending data they shouldn't, it will be picked up pretty fast. Even Microsoft have to follow privacy laws.
@Those who asked how they would block it: They wouldn't, they would just say by "policy/law" that third pary browser/software is illegal and sue those who try to make it/install it.
-

Not if it is sent in disguise as a "feature". Like help make us better or something and then they can collect any information.. more like they will collect and write it down somewhere in the User agreement. Most people would never bother to read it.
The data can then be sold or used internally to collect market information...
and still if Firefox/chrome are banned then bing will get a boost will it not? They will tag the site as "recommended" or something.

Like I said, they can disguise it as much as they want, it will be picked up. If they change their user agreement, someone will point it out.

and like I said, how many people care/would care? Yes, someone would pick it up, but what if the data is encrypted? what if the data is encrypted to "preserve users privacy"? we will know if data is sent but we won't know what is sent.
and then those who will buy new windows will have only the given explorer to use and its either Windows 8 or Ubuntu or something. And then it will come pre-installed in most laptops and people like the good sheep they are will use it, haven't you read some windows fanboy posts?
btw, Ubuntu has yet to solve the issue of installing every software without using the terminal and windows will be needed to use Office and other stuff.
btw, we are missing the whole point, that is the freedom to choose being lost.
-
no no no no. I tired of idiots saying it's going to be blocked/banned/whatever and everybody else keeps propagating the stupid news. They can't go on there because THEY HAVEN'T BEEN MADE YET. Windows RT is the ARM processor version of Windows. It's a new frigging operating system, they need to reprogram for new libraries. There is no blocking, banning, or anything like that.
-
I also think this is false. Windows has no need to block other browsers. They can get data if they really want it.
