Is it worth it to download Backtrack 5 R2 or should I just stick with BT5? Normally I would assume that going with the newer version is better but considering that it takes 8 fucking hours to download I require supreme motivation to do so.

So, BT5R2 or BT5?

BT 5 R2 is beta isn't it? IF that is the case, I would stick with the stable release.

But, as I've read, BT is built on Ubuntu and if you have a good stable Ubuntu release, why not install le programs needed like Airocrack and all. This is what I have  almost heard.

Honestly, I think BT is good for the community. It provides everything needed for a seasoned pentester, or n00b. It's the beta I don't trust, drivers among other stuff isn't working/reliable enough for a full install. Live CD is perfect for this kinda stuff.

I have considered that. But I use Backtrack to learn. So having all of those tools right there to play with is good.

Good point about beta btw. Lol too bad for me I already started the BT5R2. I suppose I can have both. I think it's always good to have ISOs on hand.

Sounds good. I wish more distros where tailored to me, with all the SDK's and API's I want. ISO on hand, especially on a live CD or thumb drive, isn't a bad thing. More tools ==  productivity.

Well sir I have nothing more to add to that because I couldn't have said it better. I happen to be a bit of a hoarder in that sense. If I had enough of them I'd create endless amount of live cd and usbs that I may or may not ever use.

I downloaded it a few days ago,and yes, since BT5 it's based on Ubuntu, but I think collecting all the programs on Ubuntu instead of just downloading BT is nonsense...
It takes its time to download  ( about 4 hours at my home),but it's worth it. The collection of tools is quite nice, and there's kinda a tool for everything.

I personally always carry a USB with LiveBoot with some Linux distribution with me,so I can break into any normal Windows computer in a few minutes...
And as there are a lot of useful tools on BT5,I decided to replace the Ubuntu with BT5R2,and I'm satisfied with BT5R2

I haven't used R2 yet, I'm avoidant: I hear it has a major bug in it. Have they patched?

Well I think SOMEONE will patch it. I've never heard of anything patching itself. I think staying with the stable release however, is best.

What I meant is if I download R2 will it update itself....or will we have to go to their website to download/apply patch?

The 0day patch I guess is in wicd. Here is the exploit/patch in python:
