: How to hack a digital billboard
: Stormhammer May 30, 2012, 08:59:44 PM
I'll have to go visit one to properly document how I went about it in the past, but here was the DefCon 16 on how to hack a digital billboard.

http://www.defcon.org/images/defcon-16/dc16-presentations/defcon-16-tottenkoph-rev-philosopher.pdf

I'll write up a tut when I have a moment during an evening to do so, with screen grabs etc so I can document how I achieved it specifically ( it's been awhile since I did it )

Stay tuned!

Heh digital billboard hacking is awesome. I haven't done it though, but some time ago I was really into that and I read everything I could come across (theory that is, no one documented actual hacking in). I know there is one billboard in the city center which is wireless. Thought it's equiped with a directional antenna. I tried to scan the networks around, didn't find any that would seem the one.

Thought I didn't do anything 'cause no one else cared and I alone was a bit afraid :P

Did you scan for a hidden SSID? I wouldn't put it past whomever set it up that it was hidden.

I can't remember if I did... all I can remember is that I didn't find any suspicious networks :P

"We where drunk and it sounded like a good idea at the time". LOLOLOLOLOLOL, story of my life.

I worked for Verizon, well Frontier which bought out most of Verizon network.

I see cameras on most of them too. If their digital (which most all are) a hat or hood studded with IR LED's will take care of that. I did the IR LED thing and it hid my face completely, just looked like a flashlight blaring at the cam.

Side note, on a transformer in my city, I reversed the VCC and VDD and blew some corporate transformers and put half the city in a blackout. See first sentence for why lol.

After reading most of the supplied link, this could test a lot of hackers skills. Physical being lockpicking, and physical undetection. Software, breaking wireless security. Post exploit, digging around to find what you need, possible rootkit or trojian for remote lolz.
