I have a question if you don't mind.

1) You used a camera flash circuit which is charged and then discharges when you press the button for flash. Did you calculate the lenght of the tube? I mean the projectile is only propelled till the half the lenght of the coil and then if we if do not open the circuit the direction of propulsion will be reversed, right?

From my physics classes I remember the discharge time, t = RC, right? So, what if the projectile travels more than 1/2 of the tube before the time is up,  will it not be better to break the coil in two or three or more in series and charge one after the other, like the projectile travels half of the first coil and then the is OPEN, then when it is just about to enter the second coil the second coil circuit is closed and so on? will it be better and if yes how will it be done...

Will using a clock do?

I didn't do any calculations, the coil discharges before it gets stuck in the tube. This is because it's so weak and uses just one 330uf capacitor.


For the second part, you are correct. A setup like you mentioned is called a multi-stage coil gun. You will need to use solid-state-relays for the switching. As for timing when to fire the coils, you could use a clock, but I've had the idea of using optical sensors to fire them. Kinda like a laser and photocell.


There is math involved, like the length of the tube, thickness of the wire and coils, power of the capacitors, etc... I never got into it enough to learn all of it, but there is a lot of write-ups on the methods of doing it.


There is also what's known as a rail gun, that uses two plates of metal, and shoots bolt and plasma.
