I've been reading a little bit into programming for the PS3 core processor and I was thinking...wouldn't it make for a nice machine to run password cracking on? This seems like it could be a lot of fun and a really great way to learn about a lot of cool things.
I really want to get into this, but if anyone has any insight or wants to collaborate at all on this I wold love the help!

It wouldn't be a bad platform, and it has been done (http://www.pcworld.com/article/140064/hacker_uses_sony_playstation_3_to_crack_passwords.html).
But really, if you have a few graphics cards, you could use the GPU's for the cracking. And I think it would be better than the PS3.
-
Well I don't haha and I can see this being a lot of fun anyway. ;D
-
I have a PS3 and don't want to brick it lol. I wouldn't mind if it could dual boot *Nix, but meh.
-
I read somewhere that running *nix on it, is pointless as it runs like a snail.
I could be wrong though :P but if it can't run nix, which OS would you use to crack? :)
-
there's ways to install linux still, even though they took off OtherOS, but as Techb stated...it could be dangerous.
-
I had otherOs' on my two ps3's at one stage It ran ok I contemplated using one to crack hashes but I seem to remember a flaw that would make it difficult to achieve.

yes, the fact being that certain parts of the hardware are blocked by the hypervisor.
As much as Sony would like people to think otherwise, they were against Linux from the start. They are selling this hardware at a loss, and were hobbling it from the very beginning

From what I read, I believe the hypervisor only took one of the SPU's and one was for...something else...lol. All in all, it would leave you with 6 SPU's to work with. Not so bad if you ask me. Now if someone could find a way to get to the GPU, then we are in business. ;D
