Yeah, I saw it not too long ago as well. Its pretty neat, tho its not gonna be in Europe for about a thousend years :(

Actual rate doesn't seem very large, I can bet it is just the theoretical speculations given the best conditions that Google Fiber can reach 125MB/sec rate. In reality this looks like alien-tech, but then again, same could of been said about today 50 years ago.

That's bullshit. This is fiber optics. 1000mbits is minimum for good connections (not a billion miles long). My school is connected to a fiber backbone, much like the google fiber net, and we get 1000mbits. The only bottlenecks are the cat6 cables from the core switch and all around the school and student appartments as well as the network card on most computers.

However, a good connection does not necceseraly mean 100MB/s download speed everywhere, most likely very few places. The server/machine you connect to also have to have an equaly (or better) connection.

And finally its the HDD limitations. Most HDD's wont be able to read/write that fast. SSD/PCI(SSD) would do the trick tho.

This is not alien tech, fiber has been around for a long time. The only reason why I am exited about google fiber is because its google, and they (most of the time) rock.

File sharing between fiber users in Kansas City will probably reach 100MB/sec. Can't really speculate as the what the speeds are gonna be with servers outside the network but probably still really fast. The service is 70$ per month. That's exactly what I pay for a 30mbits connection. Speed 30x faster for the same price sounds great to me.
