: Good horror movies?
: evilhacker September 09, 2012, 12:39:21 AM
Lately these days I get completely bored out of my mind. I'm looking for some decent horror movies to watch. I've seen a lot in the past winter with Deathspirit and I feel like we've watched the best ones out there and there's nothing good left. I thought I'd ask for some suggestions before watching anything because some movies were a fucking waste of time, e.g.: Black Christmas, Rosemary's Baby, etc.

I mostly enjoy mind-fucking movies mostly with twisted endings which cause you paranoia for the next couple of hours, the whole blood and gory types don't affect me much anymore. Examples of the movies I like are:
Shutter (2004) (Taiwanese one) <- You seriously need to watch that one.
Skeleton Key
Sleepaway Camp
and many more.

Any suggestions?

I've heard good things about Deadgirl, I watched about half of it but had to go do other things. It's not so much horror, but more snuff zombie kinda deal, I can see puddi getting his rocks off to it.

Not horror, but something with a great plot twist would be Fight Club, but who hasn't seen it? Ending is epic and worth more than a few watches.

There really isn't a whole lot of good horror movies though, but my recommendations are:

Last House On The Left (both old and new)
Silent Hill (kinda creepy and does well to portray the game)
House Of Wax
House Of A Thousand Corpses (or anything by Rob Zombie really)
Cannibal Holocaust (kinda old but I liked it)
Haunting In Connecticut

My favorite horror movies are the "Halloween" ones with Michael Myers :) and they aren't blood and gory types of movies either, just classics imo.  Great recommendations too, I'll look into some of them :D

I like watching the "Saw" movies, I kind of consider them horror.

I also love the saw movies! I've been a fan since it hit theaters. I went to see almost everyone of them. All the plot twists are great!

I really love how it gives you a different prospective of horror. You really cannot compare Saw's plots, ideas, and style to a different kind of horror movie. Most horror movies have something jumping out at you, Saw keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time.

-Worst horror movie in history, Jeepers Creepers. I think its more of a comical movie.

The twist was only good for the first one. All squeals expound on it, and add more "twists" that follow the same shit as the first one.

I don't like "conventional" horror movies like Saw or whatever but here are a few really good movies:

-The Thing (1982 version)
-Alien (and Aliens)
-American Psycho
-Prometheus (not really much of a horror movie, more of a sci-fi thriller, but still insanely good)
-Sunshine
-Event Horizon
-Battle Royale (weird hyper violent Japanese movie)
-Tremors

As you can probably tell, I love sci-fi.

Carrie and The Excorcist.

Classics about creepy girls. Had to write an essay comparing the two, best essay subject ever!

Recently gotten into Korean horror movies. I reccomend The Thirst and Hansel and Gretel.

Also The Shining if you haven't seen it.

I don't think they are all the same. Especially since I'm pretty sure I had to re-watch one or two of them to even get what the heck happened. I'm not retarded, so I know it has to be at least interesting. What exactly would you call a good movie then, techb? Don't tell me, something like Jay and Silent Bob? lol. At least enjoy the intellectual effort that went into Saw.

Sorry fable, but imo, Saw (along with Final Destination) has really run its course. The first one was very fun, and I quite enjoyed the Amanda ( i think that was her name ) twist in the second, but after that it became so generic that the only difference between the movies was the way they died. (I'm sure there are other differences but they truly, truly are irrelevant). But if you enjoy them, fair enough. I'd rather that movies try and be unique instead of following the same generic pattern. Which is why I liked Prometheus, they tried something very radical with it and in my opinion it paid off!

-The Thing (1982 version)
-Alien (and Aliens)
-American Psycho
-Prometheus (not really much of a horror movie, more of a sci-fi thriller, but still insanely good)
-Sunshine
-Event Horizon
-Battle Royale (weird hyper violent Japanese movie)

This guy shares my taste in movies.  A lot of them are cult films, like BR and American Psycho. American psycho is more of a psychological thriller though. Sunshine is very good, Danny Boyle is a great director, and I think it sends a few nods in the direction of the Alien franchise. The whole trapped in space thing.

That said, I think the only true horror movie from that list is The Thing. The rest are Thrillers. But then again it doesn't matter. Genre is kind of like a marketing tool.

Anyway, here are some of my other good ones.

o Let The right one in (novel is good too)

o
Scream 1 (kind of a comedy but the whole plot of the movie is based around horror movies.

o
  Blair Witch Project

o Nightmare on elm street & Halloween  (definitive of the horror genre!)

Also Roman Polanski is a great film-maker. Anything by him, horror or not.

Thai movies are exceptionally good when it comes to Horror Films. I would recommend you some, but I am literally too scared to search for them. LOL

Good movies to me are ones where you learn something, Documentarys FTW. Jay and Silent Bob is funny, but not as intellectual. However, both Clerks and others by Kevin Smith are very intellectual, especially when it comes to real life events.

@Llama, Blair Witch is good, but the second one sucked.

To add, again not so much horror, but I recently seen Sucker Punch; fucking sexy and epic. Most defiantly recommend it to EVERYONE!

Blair witch 2 is terrible.

I thought of another good one, try 'The Descent'. About some women who go caving (like spelunker)

The Hannibal Lecter Triology with Anthony Hopkins:
 - Silence of the Lambs

 - Red Dragon

Splice is fucking awkward. There's also The Cube, but it's hardly scary. Sorta entertaining though. Saw, even though a lot of people have suggested it.
I can't stand FD. It's the only movie I get up and get out of the room when someone puts it on. I literally have a phobia of Final Destination. Especially the fifth.
