Right now I have windows 7 and I don't really like it so I was going to put a different operating system in virtual box. I want to get a Linux operating system but I don't know which one to get. I was thinking about getting Ubuntu and I know about backtrack I'm going to get that sometime soon. So which Linux operating system would you refer to me.

I would suggest a debian-based distro to get your feet wet, then move to something like Arch when you get used to linux. Also, I would dual boot it with windows. A VB is just a bunch of trouble if you aren't that skilled in OS's.

as a new linux user i would go with ubuntu 12.04 or linux mint 13 maya (recommend cinnamon its really nice) I think those are the easiest to start with.
Backtrack is good but you have to do some tweaks to get some hardware working properly atleast i had to.

I liked Mint. But for a first-timer, Ubuntu or Mint is good. I agree on the debian based system.

For new users one might suggest something with a lot of GUI. in that case some kind of debian spinoff comes to mind.
As mentioned ubuntu or mint, all same game.

Somehow distro's like CentOS , Fedora and Suse are never mentioned whilst being kind to beginners aswell.

My little brother recently started with linux.
I sat aside and guided him through Arch's install , which is plain CLI recently.
He did the typing and i let him do the thinking.

I believe he learned more linux in 4 hours than most ubuntu users do in 6 months.

But thats just me, im an asshole :D
