: Uses for an old wireless router
: Corrupted_Fear October 27, 2012, 08:23:29 PM
Hi there,

I have in my possession an old wireless router, WRT54G ver. 6 to be exact. I was just going to use it as a wireless repeater, but what ideas does everybody else have? its not exactly useful to search google for "uber 7334 hacker uses for an old wireless router". I thought about converting it into a pirate box sort of idea, but I don't really need one of those, I don't do much file sharing. So, any suggestions/ things you want to see done?

I found some nice info here (http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials/article.php/3832576) for you.

Tell me what you think.

Yea, I found that earlier, but didn't see anything particularly eye catching. Most of what I've found is use it for security or extending range. I live literally in the middle of the woods so security isnt a huge problem around here, but I am looking at the range though, it could be helpful for my tablet that has extremely poor wireless hardware.

Flash DD-WRT on it, set it up as a repeater with a hotspot that you charge people in your neighborhood to use it :P

Yup, I was leaning toward that (the DD-WRT part, im afraid im the only person within a half mile radius around where I live). Thanks a ton, commence weekend project.... NOW.

Shouldn't take a weekend more like 20 minutes o.O

Go search through hackaday.com, they have a few posts on really cool things people do with old routers. You basically have a low power Linux box. They feature mostly robotic stuff though.

So far I've done the repeater, it works but isnt as much fun as I thought it would be, maybe a hackaday post would help. Thanks, ill take a look.

This is the use I'd recommend. This is a firmware (check if there's one for your model!) that comes with Tor preinstalled on it. Tor-ifying all the connection that passes thru it. Be careful, tho, don't brick your router, check specs before anything.
:
http://torporfavor.org/I know not many here in this forum like Tor, but if you're a Tor user, why not Tor-ifying your connection straight from the router?  ::)

Might be of interest as well

(Should be able to be ran on WRT54G)

I've got the same router, v.5 and v.6. I was gonna use them for repeaters too but I'll be moving within the next couple of months so I'll probably flash them later..or use one as a receiver if possible and plug it in to either my server or my supercomputer as soon as I'm done building it.

@EmilKXZ:
That is brilliant. Next weekends project found. TY for the share.

@skidiot.h:
Well, I believe I know the person who shared it in the first place, goes along the lines of "Corrupted_Fear". I was going to do that, but I really have no use for such a box, so I didnt see much reason to make it.

I do like the tor idea though, im going to have to give it a go

If you can flash DDWRT or something like Tomato on it you could do interesting stuff.
As long as you can have a busybox or full blown shell on it....
You could compile software on the device.
Damn if you can get those tiny girls in monitor mode ... that would provide some interesting stuff.

You could also create yourself a backpack with one powerful rogue_ap.
There really is a lot of great stuff to be done.

I like the backback idea, but I would need a mobile power source of some kind. If I'm going to go that far I may as well just get an entire Pineapple IV (http://hakshop.myshopify.com/products/wifi-pineapple)
