: Confused and Curious (A_lot_of_winodws_users_here?_())
: proxx November 05, 2012, 04:41:36 AM
So I been around here for a couple of weeks.
I started noticing that there are in fact a lot of windows users here.
As the title states Im slightly confused with this.
For example in the "post your browser" topic I was schocked to see so many windows.

Myself ive been a fulltime linux user for a couple of years.
I will probably never go "back" to windows.
I like to be in control of my OS, since I use linux im in the drivers seat and actually have full control, its my friend and not my enemy.
As for security related topics this is the most ideal platform ive ever used.

Please explain to me why you use windows?
(I know we linux ppl can be nazi's when it comes to microsuck :D )

Or just burn me down or ignore me thats also fine with me :P

only use windows for 3 things
1. photoshop *cant get it to work with linux :(
2. when i need to use my electronic ID from my bank *no linux support
3. 3D movies *problems with subtitles on linux

I have a solution for this , however it uses WINE.
Came across the same problem :)
Convert Srt To Ssa.exe
http://macallan-convert-srt-to-ssa.software.informer.com/

Runs fine on wine 1.5.X

VLC and SMplayer(mplayer gui) can play with SSA files.

Just out of curiousity; what distro are you running?
Im using Arch , although I dont totally agree with the devs I must say its the best distro ive ever used.

hmm will try that to see if it works.
I use mint as primary and bt5 as secondary
I do have downloaded some arch version just never had time to install it

I think it's just that windows is better for some tasks. Also, it's really mainstream so a lot of things only work for it. In my opinion, you should have both a windows and linux, at least, that's what I do.

I also noticed this. I use Arch almost completely full time. I have windows dual-booted because I've noticed some HDMI problems with Arch. Also, I've borked my system enough times where its VERY useful to have a backup operating system.

I will never go back to windows and I will probably never not dual-boot. Oh, BTW I agree with you that Arch is the best OS ever.

lolz I use it for proprietary applications that dont work well with wine or are not available for linux. For example Adobe Master Collection, Sony Vegas, TMPGENc, etc but I got backtrack on USB, DVD and installed on my laptop dual booting with my girls computer. I also have a media hub running on *nix (debian)

Yes, I will confess - I am using windows. But before you put me down, I just want to say this - I'm using it for coding windows/android apps and other giant softwares, stuff is easier with windows.

I like this
(I know we linux ppl can be nazi's when it comes to microsuck :D )

Well in my work (at least when i have one) its mandatory for me to use windows,my clients use windows,i must always know how to troubleshoot problems in windows.

Internet is full of Linux vs Windows debates, so here are some reasons which i agree with(from web). Here (http://www.pcmech.com/article/why-use-windows/) and here (http://www.daitengu.com/2011/09/07/why-i-use-windows-7-over-linux-on-my-main-pc/)

Why use linux ( i totally agree)

[/size](1) Morals. Don't give money to a company convicted of criminal behavior.
(2) Free software. You can burn copies of most Linux distros and give them to your friends without being taken to court. You can examine the source code and modify and learn from it. With Linux, you have control of the software, not some criminal company.
(3) Security. No spyware/viruses to contend with on Linux.
(4) Customizable. This isn't Soviet Russia where everything must look the same. Even without modifying the source code, you make Linux look any way you want. Witness the screenshot thread on Ubuntu Forum's Coffeehouse.
(5) Easier. Ubuntu and Fedora have tools that download and install multitude of programs in one click. This is impossible in Windows.
(6) Portable. There are Linux distros which can run on systems Windows was never able to.

I use Ubuntu (laptop), Arch and Windows 7 (desktop pc, dual boot). The latter also because of some programs that only run in Windows, i.e. Photoshop (I don't really like Gimp) and because I like to test my own projects in several OS.

No ubuntu no more? Or do you dual-boot

I grew up on windows, never even heard about linux until about 4 years ago. But from 5 years ago until just about 6 months ago I was hardcore into gaming on my PC. So now I'm working on making thebeffort to switch over to *nix which is harder than I thought it would be lol. Old habits die hard and all that

I'm missing a driver for my wifi-card on linux (not available  :'( ) so I have to use Windows to be able to connect to the internet...
And all the things I code are for windows too,so useing Linux for that would be kinda stupid...
But I've Ubuntu dual-boot (rarely use it tho,and BT5R3 on USB)

But I'm going to buy a new laptop by christmas, and then switch to linux  ;)

I grew up with windows and go really used to it so I use it because I'm familiar with it..I have Ubuntu on a desktop computer (or did till the mobo blew, getting a brand new one with an 8 core processor though:3), but it took hours to install the drivers for the wifi card, and then it stopped working -.-. I installed it on my laptop and the wifi card worked immediately, no driver installation needed. But I still use mostly windows..one day I will make the change to strictly *nix.

Agree with lucid, I thought most people here would go for arch, debian or gentoo.

On-Topic, I mainly use windows because the course I'm taking requires it, and because of the games (I have a Optimus enabled laptop, it won't play nicely with linux). Other than that, I have multiple VM's with various OS's (Windows server, windows xp, ubuntu, backtrack, arch,...) and a secondary laptop with Backtrack and XP, on which I mainly use Backtrack.

I use Windows for Gaming (no starcraft on linux) and school work, but other then that I'm pretty much full Linux. But this isn't saying much because most of the time I'm either gaming or doing school work so most of the time I'm on windows :\

Wow nice to see all these replies :)

Now the point about gaming I can fully understand.
There arnt much games native under linux and however great WINE is it still sucks.
Sometimes I play this game called Savage2 which is great and runs native on *nix.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLfFZ2hYQOw
Its free and its dieing sadly.
Valve/steam is currently being developed for linux and is soon expect to fully work(psst performance is better :D)

I also have an optimus laptop, which was the worst thing i could have bought, im amongst millions here damnit.
Fuck nvidia.

Right so I love linux vs windows warfare but indeed there is plenty of shit on the net already stateting every possible argument.

Couple months ago I deleted the last NTFS partition I had on one of my older machines and im proud to say I have no windows installation.
If course I grew up in a windows world im not that old.
After fighting windows for years, stripping explorer.exe and all kinda crazy shit, tweaked the hell outta it.
I started asking myself what fuck I was trying to do, its reverse logic.
Instead of stripping something down I wanted to have something that was according to my rules.
Hell I even stopped computing for a couple years.

Then I went head down into linux, I was lost, I had no fucking clue whatsoever.
I sat in front of a PC for the first time in my life.

I battled it , got REAALLY frustrated , fucked up just about anything.
Now its love.
Im running Arch with Awesome WM.
Ran Gentoo, debian, fedora, ubuntu, suse, centos, slackware, dreamlinux and a couple others.
Iam still married to arch.

I used to have big trouble with drivers and all that kinda shit but sometimes it just requires knowledge and a lot of reading.
My main machine which also runs optimus is fully working, in fact I have far more control over the hardware than on windows.
One example is the battery life, using laptop-mode-tools and tweaking it + some other things I almost doubled the battery life compared to windows.
Eat that microsoft :D

INDEED WHY UBUNTU !!??? :P

*edit*
*Scratching head
Rereading my own post.
Is sound enthusiastic like a child with a new toy lol

This reflects my feelings on that quite nicely:

you may not enter the forbidden land of gentoo

You reminded me, it's necessary for me to be using windows right now because I'm studying for my A+ exams coming up in spring.

As for the "why Ubuntu", it was the first *nix I heard of. It seems like Arch linux is really popular though, maybe I'll try that out and use it instead.

Yeah I originally was planning on moving on from Ubuntu once I learned how to use a linux system, but I am just too busy to mess with it now, so Ubuntu it is! At least on my laptop. As far as Windows goes, I use it on my main computer because I just find I have less problems with it working with common file types, etc because everyone uses it.

First, windows can run hardcore game. Second, It is user friendly with almost no problem or error. Third, there are ton of app for windows. Fourth, Some  website still require you to use IE.
: Re: Confused and Curious (A_lot_of_winodws_users_here?_())
: proxx November 08, 2012, 03:39:12 PM
Are you serious.
User friendly?  anything but that.
Its the illusion because people dont know better.
Whats more user friendly than full control?
Ubuntu takes one click of a button to install the graphic driver.
The rest of the driver work out-of-the-box 99% of the time, something windows cant beat.

No problems and errors?
Lol windows is nothing but errors and problems which are impossible to debug because everything is locked down my microsoft.
Blue screen here, random crash there.
Laggy, unstable way too much bloat and shit barely anyone ever uses.

Really from which planet did you come?
Have you ever used linux in the first place?
Dont mean to be flaming but are you able to compare..

Ive used windows for along time and exactly this is the reason I no longer do.

Blue screen here, random crash there.
My graphics driver will always cause a BSOD under windows 7, and it was the original system the laptop came with. Nvidia and Microsoft, they still don't know what's causing the problem, as various users with the same setup as mine (nvidia with optimus tech) are reporting this issue. So yeah, it sucks...

Laggy, unstable way too much bloat and shit barely anyone ever uses.
As for this, after a fresh install I always cut down everything possible (services, startup processes) in order to maximize performance of the OS. It sure gives me a lot of work as there are tons of services one won't ever need. Oh, and no aero shit, I like my Windows 98 look ;)
: Re: Confused and Curious (A_lot_of_winodws_users_here?_())
: proxx November 08, 2012, 05:34:10 PM
Yes thats why i used to do.
But thats totally reversed logic.
First you take something than strip it down.
You buy a villa and than break it down to the cellar.

I realized I was doing the inverted logic thing.
: Re: Confused and Curious (A_lot_of_winodws_users_here?_())
: lucid November 08, 2012, 06:58:57 PM
I agree with was proxx said. Windows is not user friendly because if you get an error you are usually forced to stare at it blankly and then restart your computer hoping it works. With linux you can actually interact with the problem and fix it.

People think Windows is user friendly because there are programs for everything.
Example: I need to split a file into four chunks. While in windows "all you have to do" is get WinRAR, open it and use it. In linux it is as simple as this:

split --bytes=50M splitfile.zip

Done.

I use windows as my primary on my desktop. I am dual booting with fedora which I also rarely use. Mostly when I need a quick php project or something. The main reason I use windows is Netflix won't work on linux and youtube videos are all small like when I full screen them.

I also have in my possession a latop that has Mac os X on it. I have a bt5 on a usb that I use on it mostly. I have a little bit of every os :D

Yup I have to admit that windows don't allow user to solve the problem themselves. But it save time for me since it is hardly crash or anything(While in ubuntu i do crash a lot).

Gonna pull this up again, im a bitch.

It sounds like im gonna be the typical linux-nazi and tell you that if your windows is running more stable than your linux install than you doing something seriously wrong.
Ive had i think 1 crash in the last month or 2, probably even my own mistake as I was messing with rollback packages due to fucked kernel.
Its really up to you its in fact more stable than windows 1,2,3,5,7,8 or 11 doesnt matter.
Its no suprise most servers run either linux or BSD..
Why are they often harder to break into..

Oke im gonna stop this, im  just bored.

Blah blah blah(Something silly about ubuntu).
That's ubuntu's fault not linux's fault.
