I happened to "come across" an iBook G4 with the PowerPC processor in it, I've heard a lot of good things about the hardware in the iBook series. I used it on and off for a while to keep it updated and running and stuff, but then some dumbass decided to see exactly how "good" the hardware is by hitting it with a heavy metal object over the spot where the harddrive is (without my permission, obviously). So now the harddrive is useless, making the computer useless without a spare. I found where to buy the harddrive for one online for fairly cheap, but I want to know if it's worth it. If I were to get a clean harddrive for it, what are some of the things I could use the laptop for? I've heard of people running Fedora on them, or cracking a newer version of OS x for it, but is there anything else I could do to make it worth it?

I like to use old laptops as home servers. But last time I had that question, I just googled "uses for an old computer", and I did got some interesting suggestions. For example, using it as a gaming machine, to play old games (I love metal slug!) ;)
Other nice suggestion is using it as a VPN server, so you can fully access the internetz from your workplace/school/whatever...

Buy the cheap HDD then smack your friend's head with it, teach him a lesson in respecting other people's belongings.
On Topic: For a hardware that was produced more than 10 years, definitely it will be inferior in performance. Therefore, the only thing I can think of right now is installing mini Linux distros.

Mine was made in 2004... O.o.
Yeah, it may be inferior in performance, but that depends 100% on what you're going to use it for. PowerPC processors have proven themselves to be very stable, so using it for a home server wouldn't be a bad idea if I wasn't already planning on building a home server..maybe I'll use it for that anyways, it's better than what I currently have, which I honestly have no idea what it is. It's obviously a server motherboard, 3 RAM slots and other weird shit, its a Compaq, but other than that.. o.o.
Although VPN would be nice..
