Are there any currently active open source malware projects?

Not that's public I'm sure :P

Yes there are. Does that mean they're easy to find? Nope. Are they public? Probably not.

Actually writing malware such as viruses or worms is illegal. So in order to get into some projects your going to have to make a reputation for yourself first so people trust you more. Then you can browse onionland or get invited if your rep is good enough.
I'm not deep in the underground though so I'm just speculating here, best I can offer ya bro

It depends on which country you're in and for what "purpose." If it's for research and security defense purposes (ie. to simulate attacks) then it's legal so long as you only test it on property of yours or that you have explicit permission to.

If it's for research and security theres no way it's going to be open source, people would be trying to make $$ off that shit. I mean, it's possible. But highly unlikely lol
