I am new linux user too and i use debian.

Regarding which distribution to use, there is no correct answer imo. Try a few and then keep the one that works best for you. Most distros have live discs which you can use without installing anything to your hard drive, so download those and try them out. distrowatch  (http://distrowatch.com/)has a lot of useful information regarding Linux distros.

I think Ubuntu is a good starting place, all though i started with debian to learn linux in general , is quite complicated for a beginner,Ubuntu is derived from it making most configuration tasks smarter.

More experienced users should give you better advises.

You can visit this site and take the test http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/ (http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/)
It gathers info from the answers you give and in the end it gives the user a list of distros.

Try searching the forums, theres several other posts regarding this very topic. And it really depends on what you want, do you want an easy to use windows replacement? If so, ubuntu is what you want. If your looking to actually get into *nix and gain control of the CLI then I personally would start with Debian. And if your ballsy and don't get easily frustrated then go for Arch and don't say I didn't warn ya.

Arch could be hard and frustrating for people that has no prior knowledge of Linux. I mean with arch you basically recompile the whole system :P

Unity is a Window manager (like Gnome, AwesomeWM, KDE etc.), not a distro. And it sucks.

Gentoo is for professionals, start with Ubuntu,Mint or any of their variants, there are all based on Debian so there is almost no difference between them.

There is a big difference between Debian and Ubuntu.  Debian is the original and doesn't have all the crap.  Ubuntu is the crap filled one.  My recommendation for a new linux user is either Fedora or Debian linux.  My personal preference for a distro is either Fedora, Debian, or Arch.

First time? Don't do Arch. Unless you are willing to spend more time reading and posting help threads all over the internet than actually doing anything productive on the computer.

Debian. Go Debian. Don't bother with Ubuntu. Especially not now that they've scrapped Gnome 2 and went to Unity. It's complete crap. It's practically worse than windows..

Honestly, any distro will do, but I recommend staying away from Ubuntu, as the previous posters have said. The Unity UI is indeed horrible. I've started referring to Ubuntu as "Linux Vista".

You can pretty much adapt any distro into your own personal armory and life suite, but for beginners go for a Debian-based OS, like Linux Mint (basically Ubuntu minus most crap), or just straight Debian. Be sure to look into Fedora as well for another viable option. Red Hat's stuff is great.

Eventually you can start looking into building your own distro for your personal needs.

Personal preference: I got puppy linux on a USB to build my own.

Or if you want documentation: http://lifehacker.com/5680453/build-a-killer-customized-arch-linux-installation-and-learn-all-about-linux-in-the-process

I would have enjoyed this a few years back...

I agree with everybody else, Ubuntu sucks. I've tried dozens of distros and I always find myself going back to Arch, Mint with Mate and Crunchbang. Each of them are good for something different.

I've learned the most from Arch, it's setup exactly like I want and is super fast.

Mint is a good kind of beginner distro and for a lot of people feels like Windows and is easy to setup

And I like Crunchbang because it's light and will run on my old Dell Latitude D410 :P It's also based off Debian now so it's super stable and has my favorite window mangager, Openbox. It's also really easy to setup

I've experience the same BS with the Ubuntu distro and worst of all, it doesn't like my cheap ass Compaq desktop from Walmart, plus Mandriva Linux totally screwed up   the video card because I messed with the hardware settings lol

I get some sort of "MP_BIOS IO not connected to ACIP" bug at start up but the new video card takes over which is why I can still use a monitor...

Sometimes I try to experiment with new distros, but I just can't get away from Arch either. I'd say it's definitely the best.

Lol I did this and it gave me debian as #1 lol which I find funny because its my favorite nix distro for standard home use :P (also even as a server)

I'd suggest either debian/ubuntu/mandriva for you ;)

+1 for CrunchBang. It makes my acer travelmate 290 so fast and useful, it's unbelievable.
For servers I prefer Debian with just the base system (no graphical environment) and SSH.
Arch seems attractive, but I never took the time to explore it fully (I've only experimented with it on a virtual machine).

Same as you, the test seems very precise. It showed me Mandriva as #2, but I've never tried it.
