: [help!] Mint installation
: p_2001 December 30, 2012, 08:23:39 AM
So, i tried Mint 14 from usb and then installed it on a partition of my laptop. it installs fine and you can see the linux directories on the said partition which i mounted as "/".

but like it does in ubuntu there is nonew bootloader and i still boot into windows 7 loader. there is no entry to boot into mint here either.

I've tried google and it said to use a boot recovery tool. ran it and no solution. used easybcd too.

does anyone know how do i add mint to the bootloader?

Dont use the windows boot loader, use grub or lilo or something

i know.. ive used ubuntu and fedora in the past and they install grub during the installation with an option to call windows bootloader. but in mint this is not happening.. are you suggesting that I install grub manually?

You just didnt configure the installer properly.
It probably says something like "install bootloader"

This didn't make sense to me. Isn't GRUB supposed to replace the Windows bootloader, not call it?

it does.. but on my desktop I have ubuntu, fedora, xp and win 7..
When I installed ubuntu the bootloader was replaced and the new one had an entry

"windows 7 bootloader" along with the ubuntu ones.
When you use this option  you get into the windows bl with the thirty seconds timer and all.

@prox..
I installed mint just like I did ubuntu on desktop....
gui>>date etc >> partition ext 4 >> set it as "/"
then install on it... I did make another partition for swap...

It actually does.
This is called "chainloading"

But I mean why do it when grub works fine by itself?

Windows needs to be booted by its own bootloader.
GRUB passes on control.
I Think due to the close source nature of windows that all the preloading and shit has to be done by windows itself.
