Seriously, anyone here use windows essential or windows defender as antivirus. It got quite good review and detection rate. If not what do you guy suggest?
-
Only noobs need av's, I haven't used an av since.. 2010?
But if you are that worried about it, just stick avast on there and you will be fine. I don't know about the windows stuff, never used it.
-
Some time ago I tested essentials and it felt like the worst av ever. Suggesting Avast as well.

I don't think I've ever used antivirus on any of the 30-50 computers I've owned
If you're smart, you won't need one

I've only been legitly using a computer since 2008 so..

I was virus free for 3 years, then got hit by a new generation of the zeroaccess rootkit about 6 months ago. I literally got hit, saw something funkky was going on and disconnected from the web, pulled open my phone and found an article about zeroacces.gen.b or something like that written 2 hours earlier. That ruined my week :(
On the bright side, i had a lot of fun messing around in the registry fixing it and learning my way around the registry and some of the .dll files on win 7 as well as services, processes, and some tools in the default install I didn't even know existed. Then I wiped my HDD and did a clean install just to be safe lol ^_^
As for windows essential, i would avoid it. Windows has bugs, period. All of their software has problems with being vulnerable over and over again, it may not be their fault as its entirely possible every program has flaws but since windows are the only ones gauranteed to be on most installs out there malware coders focus their efforts on default and commonly used windows programs but thats another subject to debate, but historically speaking your odds are going to be higher for failure if you use a windows AV. Simply because of the number of flaws windows products have had/do have.
I personally am a HUGE proponent of Bitdefender, though I heard they went from 30 a month to 60 :(
But for free options, Panda cloud antivirus is amazing though its still in beta. It catches all the infections, just doesnt remove them all. So id say go Panda, then run malwarebytes periodically and you should be okay.
edit*
is proponent even the right word to use there? this doesn't happen often, but I'm doubting my english 0.o

Legitly as in running a legal operating system, or you actually getting into computers other then games and email?
I've never ran a legit operating system with the exception of various Linux Distributions. Even whenever I buy a new laptop I wipe off the crap that's loaded on there and install a fresh copy of 7 and use my KJ Activator lulz As far as using a computer I guess it was back in AOHell days in like '99-'00 if memory serves right.

I got my first laptop when I was 15, in 2008. Been making music and using evilzone since I started. Evilzone taught me everything I know.

I have "Sophos Endpoint Security and Control", it was given to me for free in a sec-event.
It's not been bad so far. Yet I take care as if I had no AV at all. It catches my dodgy stuff, but it does not delete it, something I like because it's easy to lose a sample that way. I stopped using some AV's because they deleted my stuff without permission and I hate that.
If I get the UTM in my hands, I think I'll fall in love with that.
Oh btw, is not intrusive as some others (home AV's), perhaps because this is enterprise-grade AV.
-
Well I visit porn site a lot, so av might come in handy. Another reason for me to use av is my parents use com for online banking.(You know how old generation use computer) I am using avira right now, should i move to avast?

I agree with you about bit defender, but it uses alot of ram. And i have a slow pc with 512 MB ram. So im using quick heal total securety. Its fast , doesnt use much ram , has boot time scan, gives great protection , scans files when reading or writing it. Saves updates as files, It can also stop autorun and it can also detect viruses that arent in its database.(it has some post of DNA scan thinggy) So what do you think about it should i stick to it or should i run avast ?
I have a question , do you guys avoid using AVS becaus you run linux? Or is it that you guys use windows but dont use cracks . I use alot of cracked softwair and other printing stores and cyber cafes will install viruses in your flash drive if they get a chance . So i think i better use avs for protection.

Just use Linux and you won't be needing any AV.

Just FYI for everyone out there, the first virus ever written and released into the wild was written for the *nix kernel. Just because you run *nix doesn't mean your magically virus proof, flaws and exploits exist everywhere, what it means is that your odds of getting a virus on *nix are beyond slim because such a small percentage of people use *nix as their main desktop in the world that it just isn't good business for a virus writer to write it for *nix. There definitely are virus's for it, and some really nasty rootkits too.
-
No AV for me. As said before obviously linux isn't foolproof but I am not worried about getting infected. I haven't had a virus on Windows for quite awhile and I use no AV.
-

Of course there are. But the magnitude of their ability to spread is extremely low, of course depending on the user's discretion, the privileges of the user account used.
Linux viruses would be actually be very target rich as most web services these days are run on linux and despite few are heard of. The main barrier is file permissions. That just kills the spread vectors.
But all this doesn't mean linux boxes are secure from all attacks. There are vulnerabilities in softwares and one just needs to find a door and a trick to get their way in.
