Does everyone here use the standard qwerty keyboard layout, or do you use different layouts? I just now switched to dvorak and I'm really liking it so far. Thoughts?

qwerty for life. I have been using it all my life and there is no way I am going to learn how to type on a different layout after so many years on qwerty.

I actually have never even seen a different layout keyboard in a computer store. Strange.

Do your research on the dvorak layout and youll see why i switched..and why its so unpopular

I understand that is a much better and logical layout, but that doesn't change it for me, because I can touch type on a qwerty keyboard and wouldn't want to unlearn it and learn a new layout as that transition might be quite painful. You could say I am just lazy. qwerty works for me very well. Also, most of computers in the world use qwerty so I think its best to just stick with it as I often use many computers in many different places that all have qwerty keyboards and changing to a different layout every time would just be an overkill. But thats just me.

Well, I could say that you're being lazy, and maybe you are, but really I don't think you realize how easy of a "change" it is. I'm not going try to change your mind, but I do hope you realize that 1) it isn't really a change and 2) you don't have to give up your qwerty skills at all. By next week I should be typing just as fast on this as qwerty, and then I can move on to higher speeds. This is also a much healthier way of typing. But I can see why you wouldn't want to try it.. it's not exactly as practical as it should be, it's just kinda something I took on as a hobby, and for a few extra "nerd points" I suppose.

Ive thought about learning one handed dvorak before, but the transition was to painful and i just couldnt bring myself to put the time in it would take to be comfortable with i. Ill stick with qwerty for now, though i do hate having to reach so far for parenthesis and stuff. I may macro those onto my mouse.....

I already type at 75 to 80 wpm, I don't need to learn another keyboard. People reach 110 on this one.. Maybe when I need to type more I will break my current plateau.

lol one handed seems like it'd be a bit difficult.. i'm pretty i'm using right handed right now, and im also starting to see the pain in making a switch, one second ill be typing just fine and the next its like im retarded.

lol @ people reach 110.. I'm at 140 :P which is one of the main reasons I'm doing this switch, supposedly dvorak can double your speed...typing at 280 would be SO awesome :DDD

OK, I will give it a try. Going to stick little pieces of paper with new layout letters on all the keys and will give it an honest try.

My thought is, that I would have difficulties with writing some characters of my mothertongue, like üäöß.
I considered switching to dvorak a while ago, but I don't know how to overcome the problem mentioned above.

all the scientists of the world on one side, and the german ones on one side..  germans best the rest.
Buy a product from any country... Germany made will be the best in terms of quality.

The two world wars... and the miraculous recovery in between and after them.

The German scientists involved in nuclear and rocket science.

Germany is the only European nation that I respect.

That is news to me.
I always thought other countries must hate us for world war 2.

I oppose on the nuclear science - russians were the ones with nuclear bombs.

so? If not germans then someone else. The thing was that Germany rose to power very quickly and others didn't like the competition.
The British weren't benevolent either. My own country was the richest since ancient times but once they came.. They massacared and robbed.

so yeah, I could care less. I admire power and prowess that was shown. After ww1 to rise and challenge them again.

why look at just the bad? There is good to look at and learn from.
besides, I have seen American machines and indian machines and German ones here for various medical tests. The German made are way better. (read siemens).

I could hate and focus on ww2 or I could say that modern rocket science has very heavy contribution from germans. all these sat. Comm. And other stuff....
so yeah, no other European country has done anything worth respect.
I respect Americans, Germans, Japanese and ancient indians.

@kulver, it was the germans who discovered fission.

Well its somewhat offtopic but,for your kind info..
It was India in who was the only hub of education in the ancient time.Students from all over the world came India to study. It was the Indian mathematician Aryabhatt who gave the number 0 and you can imagine without zero where have been we today. He also stated that "The earth circles the sun, not the sun and other planets circle Earth." and "Earth is not flat,it is like a sphere.", and was the first who calculated the value of pi.Indian scientist Nagarjuna first gave the formula E=mc2.In the recent years,we had Srinivas Ramanujan, who gave more than 1900 theorems and he is the one who invented the formula 1+2+3+4+....+n=n(n+1)/2, S. Chandrashekhar, who gave the Chandrashekhar limit,Raman(don't know the full name :P ),who gave gave the raman effect and much more. The list is endless, man.

The keyboard layout doesn't matter(at least to me :P ).I use the qwerty keyboard.I think you guys know the fact but the guy who made this qwerty keyboard,he wrote his name in the first line i.e. his name was Qwert Yuiop. :D

info about ramanujan is correct,

n(n+1)/2 was not given by him.
although indians discovered a very significant portion of calculus, they were never given credit.

I am going to try dvorak.. But honestly, is 280 wpm achievable??

Hey don't insult them by calling them Indians, they were Bhartiya and India is a totally corrupt country.I used Indian so that any other member who claims his country is the best can understand.
For the dvorak keyboard,it is different for left handed people and different for right handed people. I don't think 280 wpm is achievable with any layout. However,if that's true, you can achieve the same by practicing on the qwerty keyboard. In my opinion, the best keyboard layout is the one which suits you the best.If OP thinks the best layout is dvorak, then its his choice.
AND for the n(n+1)/2 formula,he derived it when he was in the 5th grade.

I don't know or care if it has ever been achieved, my goal is to achieve it and I will! lol 200 even would be some serious bragging rights, just imagine 280...

haha a training site? shit i didnt mess around with that, I just switched layouts on my computer and started typing. I mean, at first i DID type every row in both layouts so I could see them, took me about an hour to memorize where my new keys were, and then I just started typing using it. I'm actively switching back and forth depending  on the task though, so I'll never lose my qwerty skills
