So, I'm trying to install Arch on this tower. When I try and connect to the wireless it just wont do it.
I try manually with iwconfig, I try manually with a static IP, I try with the wifi-menu, and nothing works. I am using a really old usb wireless dongle
Microsoft Corp. MN-510 802.11b Wireless Adapter [Intersil ISL3873B]
I do lsusb and it shows up, it works for my Ubuntu and BackTrack installs.
The router is WEP 128bit HEX. I can't change the encryption in it since it is from my ISP and they locked down the firmware.

That sucks.
Installation is much more practical with wired ethernet.. I take it this is not an option?
You could take the old fashioned route;

Maybe that works.
I personally hate strange old usb adapters :P

I haven't tried the iwconfig wlan0 mode managed key blahblahblah
I could use a wired connection, but that would mean I need to move my computer to the back of the house, and there is no room in the bedroom. If all else fails, I guess I'll stick with Ubunut until I get a new laptop.

Something I've noticed is that much of the time it's easier to get wireless working after you have it completely installed and whatnot. What I always did was to go upstairs(yes all the way) and go through the install eth0 style and then install networkmanager/wicd afterwards.

I was trying to do this same thing today on an old optiplex but I already have Arch installed
I got the driver installed from the AUR and it picked up the router in network manager and iwconfig and asked for the password but it just would not connect
I tried to modprobe the correct module, that wasn't the problem
ip link showed that the dongle was down but it wouldn't enable no matter what I tried so I don't know what's going on
Very frustrating though
