: Kali Linux?
: DerpyTurtle February 28, 2013, 03:08:38 AM
Okay so as I'm sure a lot of you are aware, Kali Linux is due to be released soon. This is a new version of BackTrack, or at least developed by the same people. It's supposed to be a complete revamp of the system. I was wondering what your guys' thoughts were on this. Have any of you heard of a possible release date yet?

Its just another linux distro with a bunch of tools...?
Al kinda overrated if you ask me, nothing my box cannot do really.
Building backtrack on top of ubuntu was the biggest mistake for starters.

*OMG somebody is raping my karma for no reason, I didnt even post in the last 5 days.*

I use backtrack as my second Linux system (First being arch), but haven't really been keeping up with the updates. Figured I'd go check it out, looks nice. Glad they are switching from debian based. Prob wouldn't of downloaded it, but I saw the commercial and that sold it.....

Meh, I can do without all the packages they "try" to offer. I will install what I need from source.

Just watched the video, I like the editing. ;)
Seems a good distro like BackTrack having more power than BT. Let's see what it do. 8) 8)
btw, kali means black in Hindi. I think they like Hindi, lol. :D :D

No, kali means ink in both  Bangla and Hindi,

Black in hindi is kala and kalo in Bangla.
(hindi and bangla came from the same language, so there are alot of words that sound the same and even mean the same.)

Bro, kali and kala both means black but kali is used for feminine gender and kala is used for masculine gender in hindi, I don't know any Bangla so can't say anything about it. :P

This look interesting. I wonder how this one will be different from BackTrack. I would like to test it out, when it gets released.

This seems like the oldest trick in the book. If your product is not selling, rebrand it and sell again. If the dev team accomplishes something better, then great, if not we'll see more uber1337h4x0r youtube videos on WEP cracking.

I personally am using Backtrack 5 R3 at the moment for my final thesis project and I found it to be quite nice. The fact that it comes prepackaged with so many tools and configs is pretty useful for somebody like me who began working with Linux more or less at about the same time that I started studying Security more seriously.

For sure gonna give it a go and see if it's better than the custom distro of Backtrack that I've setup for myself.

True. But I must admit I've started using linux with BT, since it had everything already installed and at the time I had no idea how to compile a source or how to use a package manager. But eventually I learned all I needed and now I use some distro on which I install whatever I like and use (unlike BT where 80% of the tools I've never even touched) and without some instability and other issues BT has had along it's way (solving them also helped me advance into the linux world).

We'll, I gotta admit they do have a strong strategy. But yes, BT5 was dying, so a rebrand was expected. I must say I like the idea of basing their distro on debian, since I'm a debian lover and it made no sense to me to use ubuntu (which is based on debian) as their base distro.
: Re: Kali Linux?
: DerpyTurtle February 28, 2013, 05:44:21 PM
I agree with you guys, I have experience with BT and its nice to have all those tools and everything in one distro, but like it's been said before, 80% of those tools you never touch. I myself would much rather have my distro of choice loaded with the tools I prefer. As far as the rebrand goes, I can see how BT was dying but you have to admit, whether on its way out or not, it is/was the most well known pen testing distro out there. I would like to see Kali linux and what it can offer. Going back to the tools thing, BT is sort of like Windows in the sense that it is loaded with a bunch of programs that you will most likely never use. Yes I know everyone chooses different tools and has their own preferences. Unless there were like a section during the install process to ask you which tools you would actually like to use on your system. If that makes any sense. Anyway I'm finished ranting now.

Why did they change the name??? I have a fucking tattoo of backtrack on my back -.- it's got the logo with the text "< Back | Track >" inside the tail of the dragon
: Re: Kali Linux?
: vezzy February 28, 2013, 10:40:33 PM
I always thought most penetration testing distros were too bloated, BackTrack included.

I don't really understand the motivation behind this, though. BackTrack has never really declined in popularity.

No, in my opinion, it should be a highly minimal distribution. A simple stacking window manager with a terminal (rxvt or something), a browser, IRC client, tools and books. Based on Arch or Slack.

In fact, I've been meaning to do this for a while. Might release something one day.

Not a bad idea, I'm just now getting around to actually setting up and configuring my arch setup. I think we should get the Ezine idea up and moving, and then come back to this, because I really do like the idea.

Well at least like, 20 years from now it will be a really really obscure reference and only the oldschool incrowd will know what it is.

Seems like the site was already launched:

Oh, wait... must be unofficial.

Edit: Yup, it's not real. Some forum with it's name.

Not fake, but it isn't the official web site. It says there that they are an unofficial community.

Yes, it's now corrected. Thank you and parad0x for the warning.
I've found out the official site is already reserved as www.kali-linux.org, but the DNS server is resolving requests as 0.0.0.0.

Just heard a rumor about the launch date: 9th March.
: Re: Kali Linux?
: relax March 07, 2013, 07:40:13 PM
I don't really get why ppl hate backtrack its a great distro for trying new tools.
You cant know every way to break in to a system but with backtrack you will get some tools to try out so you know that it could be possible to go that way as well.
ofc it takes a lot of time to actually learn how to do things if you don't want to be a skid.
and you will never use all of the tools or even half of them, but the knowledge that they are there and to try them out will make you a better "hacker".
and yes the best would be to compile yourself on your system and its not hard to do, but its harder and takes more time to know if there's a tool for it sometimes or know how its done.

just my 2c

: Re: Kali Linux?
: Corrupted_Fear March 08, 2013, 12:08:32 AM
I agree with relax, I actually pretty much learned on backtrack. I was a skid, as most starters are, and thought I was going to be EP1C PWNZR with my new linux hack tool (even though I had no idea to use it). So I sat down, and learned every tool that came with instructions. Remember them all? haha no. but it introduced me to several principles, methods  and all kinds of other stuff that eventually led me into what I am today.

Tomorrow? Seriously? Have some sauce for that, cause if that's true I have to change my schedule for this weekend? :D
: Re: Kali Linux?
: Snayler March 08, 2013, 12:08:05 PM
Well, the guy that said it, said he saw it announced on wikipedia, on the release dates section. When I went there, there was nothing about Kali, or 9th March, so I guess either the guy was trolling or he really saw that and it was someone else trolling (mind that anyone can edit a wikipedia entry). Or maybe it is all truth, who knows?  :P

Some kind of test? Or maybe some strategy to keep the people interested. IDK...
