Beginner's Corner / Re: Looking for the best programming language?
« on: October 14, 2015, 07:08:07 am »
There is no "best" programing language. Every language has its positives and negatives, things they are good for and things they are less useful for. I would personally recommend learning a bit about the ones that interest you and then focus on one of those. Or just start with C, because it's C.

News and Announcements / Re: Board restrictions to new members
« on: October 14, 2015, 06:55:19 am »
Didn't like the idea at first, but after actually looking at the boards being blocked I think it is a good idea. People should actually post a bit if they want to have full access to things such as the ebooks and this way people will hopefully become more active. Those complaining about having to do maybe a couple hours work total to gain full access shouldn't be on here. Learning takes time and effort after all, and I think a bit of work is worth access to thousands of dollars worth of information.

General discussion / Re: Best os for someone new to Linux?

Thanks for responding. I think I'll do what gray-fox suggested and make a bunch of VMs and tinker with some different distros to find one  that is good for me.

General discussion / Best os for someone new to Linux?
« on: August 09, 2015, 11:43:50 pm »
I was wondering what the best Linux os is for someone with no previous experience with Linux os's. I want something that I can learn from, but isn't too absurdly difficult to set up or use. I've read through our sticky on Linux distributions and I'm thinking about using something like Debian or Slackware but I'm not entirely sure and I was wondering if I could get some feedback.

I upgraded. I haven't had it long enough to say how whether I like it or not but it will work until I decide what version of Linux I want to use.

Mild social anxiety and mild ocd. I also have somewhat dampened emotions with the exception of anger, but I'm not sure what that would be called.

Ah... Typical physics fag, it's called GOOGLE :P
I'm still attempting to figure out what this means. Who or what is this GOOGLE you speak of? Also what does "fag" mean or stand for? I'm pretty sure fag is not a word but is it an acronym for something? What is "it"? Please revise your sad excuse of a sentence fragment in order to properly get your meaning across.

Back on topic, school is finally out for me so I now have free time. I have been practicing the mathmatics in order to keep those skills fresh but I have not had time for much else for the past month due to how much work I had in shool. Now that it is summer I plan on continuing to to teach myself physics as well as beginning independent study in chemistry.

Sweet shirt. I wonder how long it will take for someone to give you a "hacking is evil/thedevilswork/bad mmk" speech.

Edit: or how long it will take for you to give someone a panic attack when they see you put a new shirt somewhere so dirty.

@Teapot: thanks I'll check them out

@Darkvision: I just ordered a textbook and I have been teaching myself the required math as I go. I hate how politics interfere with learning, our school system is fucked up.

For a textbook I am thinking about getting University Physics by Young and Freeman since I can get a used copy of it for $20. Does anyone have any experience with it?

Hi,
I just spent an hour writing a really long and detailed reply...

then i accidentally deleted it :/

So, here are the highlights!

Go to university to study physics, it's the best way.

If you can't do that.

     Buy or download these books
For inspiration...->I didn't have time to type the whole thing again. PM me if you want any more help. :)
Thanks a lot I will definitely check these out. I am still in high school but I am planning on studying astrophysics at UC Davis as long as I can keep my grades up. I am currently watching Walter Lewin's lectures online and I am saving up money to buy a used textbook.

semi off topic but id also suggest this biography on Feynman: http://www.amazon.com/Surely-Feynman-Adventures-Curious-Character/dp/0393316041

It is hilarious, between breaking into safes and stealing doors its just a great read. Though obviously as a biography it is light on physics. And obviously as someone above pointed out he is a great teacher, so reading his books on physics would be a good place to start. Speaking of great teachers....

http://www.amazon.com/Asimov-Physics-Isaac/dp/0380418487
http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Physics-Magnetism-Electricity-Electron/dp/0880292512
etc
Issac Asimov, great mind and a great teacher. Worth checking out.
I'll look into all of them, biographies are hit or miss with me but scientists' are usually interesting.

My main field of work is in semiconductor and photonics devices. So I would recommend
http://eu.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0470293195.html

Not cheap, but it sounds interesting. If I can find a used copy for not too much money I might pick it up.

Tokyo ghoul and one piece. Just watch the anime for naruto and it's getting kind of boring atm. Thinking of reading up the manga.. But anime is always better, i guess.
For really long series like naruto and bleach the manga is usually better because there is no filler

SIU is an epic story teller :). Anyway aside from ToG my current favorites(that havent ended) are Gamer, Magician, Breaker: New Waves, The God of High School, Girl the Wild's, Untill Death do us Part, and Prison School. Reading another 20 or so as well...but those are my favorites. Still cant recomend Tower of God enough, its by far my favorite manga/manhwa.
I a good amount of tower of god but I had some trouble following it so I stopped but I'm probably going to start reading it again once I finish berserk and kingdom.

The most recent manga I read was Imawa no Kuni no Arisu (still being released/scanned). Second last was Deadman Wonderland, which was significantly better than the half-assed anime adaptation.
I've watched the anime for deadman wonderland but I haven't read the manga. I'll have to get it when I have a chance.
