Operating System / Re: So I installed Arch
« on: February 26, 2016, 04:28:57 pm »
I installed Arch too on the raspberry pi a few days ago, and ran into a problem. Thing is my condo doesn't provide Ethernet access, only wifi. Wifi is fine but then there's this login portal that you have to get past to get net access. I spent a lot of time thinking on how to get past that since I wasn't expecting much from the minimal ISO. Thought about creating a perl script to automate that but later realized the minimal iso came with a commandline browser (elinks) and I was surprised at how well it worked.

Anyway installing arch is easy but some stuff especially setting up lvm with luks encryption along with encrypted swap is kinda tricky, but quite do-able after you test it out in a vm and write down the steps.

You could script it pretty easy to trigger on boot or something. You could also look into DNS tunnelling or try a VPN or something of that nature.

I have example code with doing this on Android using Python in the SL4A frameworks from back in like 2011.

Operating System / Re: OS Advice?

I used to and I'll go to the board of shame to atone for my sins now xD

GNU/Freesoftware/fanboy/"real hacker"/nerds like us, aside, Ubuntu/Mint/User friendly distros are a good thing for new people. I put my wife on Mint and she is happy, I am happy, and it's all good. Yeah she doesn't use half of the packages or most of anything that it has, or even knows the first thing about Linux. But she is happy to use it, she has Netflix, the shit I dl for her and webbrowsing, because that's all she ever did on Windows.

I'm happy, my network is happy, I can ssh into her shit and do updates and manage her shit and fix any issues that might happen. So it's all good.

Hacking and Security / Re: Android - Compromise

You could make the app a service and have it poll your server for commands like every 30 min or something. A simple GET request wont eat bandwidth and if it sees the command, then it'll just execute in the background since it was installed as a service.

IDK about iOS, but android handles services pretty straight forward:

If it kept crashing that much, there is something else wrong. I wouldn't blame Mint on that, I have mint installed on my wifes and my sister-in-laws laptops now for 3+ years with no issues.

You should first look into what was causing the crashing. Not doing so is just lazy and you will get no where with linux if you are too lazy to troubleshoot.

With that said, I recommend Mint for new users. If your too lazy and want to judge it based on your own ignorance then go back to windows.

The only other distro I recommend that isn't debian based is Arch, but if your having such a hard time with Mint I REALLY doubt you have balls enough for Arch.

General discussion / Re: Your thoughts on C# and Visual Programming
« on: January 29, 2016, 01:31:05 am »
I would go with the IT stuff. If you already know C/++ and Java, you don't really need C#. And if you ever did, you would only need to learn the syntax which shouldn't be an issue if you already know said languages.

So IT would be my pick.

If your school offers C/++ I would take that instead. But, to the pain of most of us, C# is used a lot in industry. You will find most jobs want C# and or Java and things, unless it's web dev.

So if C# is the only option for your school, go for it. I would, however, suggest you actually learn it instead of using the visual drag-n-drop shit.

What do you run if I may ask

I run Arch as my main OS on my laptop, media center, and as embedded for my ARM dev boards.
My wife uses Mint though.

I wish I could, I use it for work and to run other crap I need. I have a MacBook I got for 100 bucks that's probably going to get it since I want to play with it. Installation is relatively straight forward don't know why the VM gave me a headache

Because it's virtual, no "actual" hardware for it to work with. Why not duel boot?

As I have worked for a big DSL ISP in tech support in the past, I think the first thing you should try is telephone numbers as the pass. We used to suggest this to all our customers. It's 10 digits, around here anyway, unique, and easy to remember.

The good thing is for hackers, the only diff in phone numbers in an area is usually only 4 digits. Start there I would say, else get a good wordlist going.

Mine is the Ford Escort MK 2 Rally Style

I used to have an old Ford Escort, it was a piece of shit though because there was never any upkeep done on it.

Also, here is my viper on need for speed. Dream car hype:
