Beginner's Corner / Re: Hello fellow noobs! :) Free Kali linux tutorials.

Thanks for the books.

But what I don't understand is why people think so highly of Kali? It's just a debian distro and the tools that you want you can just clone them off github anyway.

The way I see it there's nothing special about Kali Linux, perhaps for the beginners out there Kali is easier to work with.

From my experience of debian (long time ago), although I must say lot of stuff is stable but I always felt like my choices were kind of limited (usually debian distros are not so customisable like Arch/ Gentoo, etc.) and also I couldn't get my hands on the latest bleeding edge software. You have to wait for months to get the latest updates.

Bleeding edge software does matter, let's say a new kernel came out and you wanna try it...it's kind of a nightmare trying to figure out how to make it work without breaking compatibility with other stuff in debian.

TLDR; Not saying Kali is bad but don't think that installing Kali will suddenly make you a super 1337 hacker or that it's the only thing out there. In my opinion the author of ebooks these days use the catchy phrase "Kali Linux" on pretty much everything as  a marketing strategy to get people into buying their books. It's certainly working for them so far.

Yeah it is true that people think to highly of Kali. I use it because it comes with most of the tools installed and its easy to do clean wipes.

Late post but decided ill share mine too.
Mine was when i cracked my old schools administrators pc password so i could bypass the firewall and make all the computers mine bitcoins for me. I was amazed what i did at the time. From the administrator computer i installed my bitcoin pool to all pc's. It ran for 3-4 weeks 7h a day :-)
Finally when the pc service guy came around because of people complaining how slow the pc's were so they were deleted.
Good good times!

I did a reddit post for installing kali sana tools ontop of crunchbang++
https://www.reddit.com/r/crunchbangplusplus/comments/3hrere/cbppkali_add_kali_2_pentest_tools/

Much better performance

To summarize:

From a fresh install of CBPP:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Code: [Select]
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.listAdd at bottom:
Code: [Select]
#Kali 2
deb http://http.kali.org/kali sana main non-free contrib
deb http://security.kali.org/kali-security sana/updates main contrib non-free
CTRL + x to quit, y to save, ENTER
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kali-archive-keyring
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kali-linux-all
* (NOTE: Takes a while to d/l and setup all the kali packages, be prepared to press ENTER a few times to accept defaults)
(I keep mysql passwords blank)
(Path to metasploit framework - for veil setup: /usr/share/metasploit-framework/ )
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade(NOTE: this ^ will install Kali Kernel 4)
-To get kali menu in right click OB-menu:
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install openbox-menu

sudo apt-get install lxpanel

sudo ln -s /etc/xdg/menus/lxde-applications.menu /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu
Code: [Select]
geany ~/.config/openbox/menu.xmlAdd:
Code: [Select]
<menu execute="openbox-menu" id="desktop-app-menu" label="Kali Menu"/>*(NOTE: I added it after </item> Line #52 // You can pretty much add it anywhere within reason) (You can change 'Kali Menu' to whatever, just note that because of the amount of tools, it will take a few seconds (dep on CPU) for the menu to appear.)
Save and exit geany.
Code: [Select]
openbox --restart(or logout and log back in)
*Note: Before you launch msfconsole or armitage, you will need to run:
Code: [Select]
sudo msfdb initFin.

Ill be remastering when I am done customizing my own.
I can post the ISO if anyone wants to request it.

Dont know how to thank you! This is just what i wanted. :-)

Metasploit runs really fast, drivers are really suitable for my computer + my USB WiFi.
Icons are cute, Desktop is easier to use and I had no performance issue.
So generally it got really better for me. (on Kali 1.0.5 I wasn't able to use text/graphical mode because of the drivers issues of ATI)
P.S.: I think 1 didn't have gedit, did it?

Im pretty sure 1.x had gedit. I at least custom installed it. Cant remember.

Have performance (graphic) issues with it, too. This isn't the case with Kali Linux 1. But I don't think it's "too modern" (don't even really know what you mean by that, tbh. Do you mean you don't like Gnome? You're not alone then :D ).

Thats exactly what i meant. Im probably going to switch toafce4. I think the performance issues are from Gnome because Kali Linux 1.x used GNOME 3.04 (Debian 7 ) and now Kali 2.0 uses GNOME 3.10 (Debian 8 ).

What you guys think of Kali Linux 2.0?  I think its a little to modern and has a few lag issues (Screen freezes for a sec always once a while). But other wise i kinda like it. It seems new because i have always used to windows 7 and below.
