Thoughts? These are huge changes, looks like it would be good for tablets, but I sure as hell wont want to use this for my desktop.

Looks dumb. They are overdoing it(once again?). The OS's these days are getting to user friendly and the developers are stuffing more behind the scenes stuff under the carpet. Which is great if you are 40 and have never touched a computer. But I am not.

Yeah I really wish Microsoft would stop trying to be other companies and just be themselves. They are  going for a more controlled more user-friendly OS a la Apple. Haven't they learned anything? Windows 7 was a huge success, why throw it away for a look more similar to Windows 7 Phones, which are doing horrible in the market?

It is kind of like the 360, they had a awesome great UI, then they changed it into a clusterfuck of menus and advertisements with a bunch of Wii ripoff crap.

If Win8 takes a significant hold of adapters we might see a bigger move to Linux.

Well, if you haven't learned anything from M$, it's what they do - they take a good thing and fuck it up. Windows or no Windows Linux always the best for me.

@ande: yes, I fully agree. Windows with it's shininess gets more and more ugly and pathetic. WindowsXP was a huge success, then it was Vista with it's fancy graphics, after that Win 7 with even more fancy graphics and now Win 8 with nothing else than fancy graphics. But we should look at the american market, those lazy bitches are already living space age, and they are the reason shit gets fancy.
Skype was awesome with it's stock window, no themes, beautifully. But noooo... they had to fuck it up, make it look shiny, and it's ad's - did you see them? - damn creepy.

As much as I hate to say it, Ubuntu with new versions are turning to shit also. Up until 10.10 (I got 10.04 because it is LTS)  it was cool, but then - new environments, gnome with it's fancy crap....
People just want to live in a dream.

As ande said, yeah it might be cool for a guy that is 40 and never touched a computer, but for me, it's just lame.... and the worst thing is, developers never look at us.

At 3:07 you can see that you are going to be able to switch between the user interfaces and he stated it will be compatible with a keyboard and mouse. Still too early in development to judge.

Ewww gross. Windows XP FTW. They seriously need to start streamlining their OS's back down instead of adding all of this unnecessary GUI junk.

The html5 integration for apps will allow people with less knowledge write powerful apps. The outsiders are gaining on us.

Looks like Windows 8 is aiming for touch screens and new users. We may not like it but this is going to help the majority of users and can make me some cash by making touchscreens out of scrapped parts.
The main problem I see with this UI is that it isn't very flexible with previous programs. Microsoft will design all of their programs for touchscreens and this interface but every non-Microsoft program will feel completely out of place (as seen by the video). They've made a decent UI but backward compatibility is holding it back and giving the user a feeling of uncertainty. If they could make a matching theme for the classic windowed mode it'd give it a more integrated look and feel.

I think I like their app design. I still hate the word "app" but I like what they're doing with it. HTML5+JS will be easy for devs and is easy to restrict by the OS. They've taken Vista/7's widgets to the extreme. It looks simple enough that devs will be able to remake most Windows programs with relative ease. If I have to learn a new UI it's nice that I can make my own stuff to go with it.

There's a so-called "classic mode" that goes to Windows 7 style. I want a "classic classic mode" that goes XP style. XP may have had simple design but I freaking love it. It's simple and effective without being ugly. Many simple UIs either look unprofessional (like many Linux WMs) or aren't effective (Gnome 3, OS X).
I think what I would really like is a dual-screen setup with web-browsing and fancy UIs and crap on one screen while having a classic UI and more functional programs on the other screen.
