Choosing a Solar backup power
« on: August 17, 2013, 08:28:34 pm »
Help me decide, forum.
I want to buy a backup power battery charged by the sun for emergencies and stuff. To charge your phone, mp3 player and whatnot, you get the idea.

Now I'm thinking to buy this: http://dx.com/p/portable-2600mah-solar-power-battery-charger-w-adapters-for-nokia-samsung-more-black-189415
But 2600mAh looks too little. I mean phone batteries are that much, but since it's charged by the sun, you can plug your phone and leave this in the sun, solving the low battery capacity problem. Although I think the solar power would not be fast enough to charge the phone and not letting the battery drain.

Then there is this: http://dx.com/p/portable-solar-power-5000mah-mobile-battery-charger-w-us-plug-charger-for-iphone-more-black-195329
5000mAh would be enough for everything I carry around to charge from 0% but it costs twice as much.

Then I saw this on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/10000mAh-Solar-Power-Backup-Battery-Charger-for-GPS-MP3-PDA-Tablet-Mobile-Phone-/251301393743?pt=AU_MobilePhoneAccessories&hash=item3a82baf54f
10000mAh and costs a bit more than the previous one and has 2 outputs, in total it looks nicer. That much juice would be enough even to charge my friend's equipment :P

So I don't know, I'm not a greedy person, so I would go for the first option as I think it would be enough as I carry just a phone around. Such a thing would really come in handy when using the GPS a lot for navigation, and if I decide to play Ingress, the battery gets drained very fast.
Last two are a bit too costly for my pocket, but if I really feel the need, I would pay for it...

Does it need to be portable?
Otherwise I would surely go for a cheap solar unit and a car battery which have a capacity that crosses anything you posted by factor 10(xx).

Of course it needs to be portable.
