Need some assistance
« on: July 26, 2014, 03:05:00 am »
Alright as some of you most likely know I recently screwed up my system by being an idiot. Today however I happened to find another computer I forgot that was in my house. Only problem is the screen is completely messed up (thankfully I have an external monitor I can hook it up too) and the Hard drive is gone from it. I have an external one that I installed the OS on but I have no idea how I'd get it to boot since for whatever reason the Hard Drive isn't detected in my BIOS. I made a boot, home and swap partition but to no avail. If anyone could help me troubleshoot this issue I'd really appreciate it.

P.S - The Hard Drive is a Segate Goflex 1TB and the os I install on it was ubuntu 14 (not my first choice really but I just assumed it'd be the easiest one to get on the Hard Drive. I'm always open to more suggestions if it could help me boot from it.)

PXE boot from another machine on the network.
BIOS as old as 15 years support that stuff.
TFTP setup isnt all that hard.

Another thought (In case the bios is indeed unable to boot from USB) I would suggest getting grub on a CD and use that to stage to the USB drive.
Just know that it will be slow as fuck running over USB in general.
See if you can select the USB mode, sometimes setting it to USB-CD or similar settings can do the trick.

To squeeze some perfomance out I would suggest loading everything into RAM such as with PXE.

Thanks for the help you guys but I actually found a solution that's working so far after you pointed me in the right direction. I ended up downloading and burning a program known as super grub disc and booted into that. From there I just checked everything + (which included usb support), rebooted into the bios, and my external hard drive was listed there which I was able to boot into. Thanks for both of you guys help I really do appreciate it.
