(Group BrainStorm Challenge) Money Transfer Anonymity
« on: September 02, 2014, 07:54:17 pm »
Recently it was posted that Phage was having issues with his hard drive. I think that as part of a community we should all do our part to help. I was going to offer to send him one of my spare HDD's but apparently that would be in excess of 50usd. So the solution is that we send him money instead.

Can we anonymously send him $30?

The conditions are thus:
1. It must be a method that is untraceable (i.e. he will be unable to tell where the money came from) and make it extremely hard for anyone else to track down the money
2. I must spend no more than $5 (aside from the initial $30 he will be receiving) in the whole process.
3. It must be a method that doesn't require me to do any form of traceable authentication (i.e. when I set up the method of transfer I can use false information)
4. It must be reasonably secure (i.e. there must be a mechanism in place to ensure only he can access the money)
5. It must be repeatable for the foreseeable future.

Important questions to answer: Does this method violate any form of wirefraud or other US/International Law? If so, which ones will be violated and what are the penalties and level of risk involved?

Lastly if we come up with a viable way to do this I agree up front to go through with the transfer.

In short if we can agree on a method that is Anonymous, Secure, Repeatable, and Untraceable, then I will go through with it.

Options that come to mind up front:
1. Bitcoin (I've never used it, so I could use some info on how it's traded and is it so highly volitile that it would lose value before he could unload it?)
2. Paypal or other online money transfers (Could this be set up anonymously?)
3. Pre-paid Debit cards (can you buy these internationally?)
4. Money Orders (I don't think this can be done without authentication)
5. Anonymous Snailmail (Not a secure way to send cash)

I don't see why we should donate 30 dollars to somebody who bought a 10 euro hdd and broke it ? :D

You can also set up some love donations to the evilzone fund, we have a hard time these days :) Though the main server will always be up because we put all of our student money into it (mainly our loved owner ande).

Well if we can solve this challenge, I may consider using it to invest in the EvilZone. But right now our challenge is set and it's two fold. We can help a member of the community, while also learning a new skill.

And after all, what good is a community, if it won't take care of it's own?

I'd like to point out, that I spend no money on it, and he did warn me it might not work.

I kind if feel bad by receiving money from the community that way.

I'm not doing this to help you, I'm doing it because I'm selfish.
1. I need you to have a computer, so you can learn cool shit, and in turn teach me cool shit. I want to help you, because I believe you can contribute to the group. This isn't just to about you, stop being selfish and let me help you.

2. I want to know that I can secretly and securely send money internationally in an untraceable manner.

A society is little more than an interdependent relationship between individuals, if it is not, then it's simply narcissistic masturbation, and while masturbation may be fun, it's not productive.

I want to help you, because it helps me. In the future, you'll be able to pay it forward with your contributions to the community.

If this site isn't meant to be helpful, what is it meant for?

I'll go along with Factionwars and say that it would be better if you donated that to the Evilzone fund.

And what you ask is really unnecessary, PP is sufficient. However if you wanna go this ridiculous then send money in a mail envelope.

Ok, now we're talking
But first I would say sending cash in the mail is a terrible idea... there's zero security in that if someone realized there was cash in it, it might not make it all the way across international borders... (that is a long way to travel)

2. if paypal is sufficient, how do you add money to it without linking it to a checking account?
3. if i buy a money pack i am tying myself to a geographic location where the money was initially purchased (this can be traced, even if i pay with cash) This may be acceptable if there are no cameras in the store but that's unlikely where i'm at. I could also consider paying a bum to buy the card for me, but that would involve another party and how would i make this exchange without him being able to identify me?

hackers normally use their brains as a magnet to manifest their needs. the internet has a wealth of resources for any hacker to come up on hardware.

here is one idea:

craigslist add: it professional, hard-drive upgrades, will beat geeksquad price.
(profit + harddrive)

in the mean time, i think sending money in an envelope is still good. there is also something called a 'money order' or 'prepaid giftcard'. you can also just buy him one from amazon.

The invariable mark of wisdom is to see the miraculous in the common.

That's pretty clever, have someone else pay for a new hard drive and you keep the old one while getting paid... I can agree that it wouldn't be hard for someone to acquire a hard drive...
A more nefarious way to get a hard drive is to go to <insert electronics store> and buy a new one. then return it (with the broken one inside) and tell them it doesn't work and you want your money back...

Money orders where i'm from require you to show your license and tend to be in areas with alot of cameras. how would you counter that?
and with the gift cards I mentioned those above, my question is: Do they work internationally?

Do think that giftcards will work but we in europe mostly don't got big fat buy everything wall marts so that would be a problem by limiting yourself to a specific card.

Well they also make prepaid visa/mastercard giftcards... that aren't limited to a specific vendor...
