I'm really interested in physics. Does anyone have any recommend reads; they can be on any type of physics. Thanks.

Not so much on physical physics, but this might sound interesting to you:

Physics is a HUUUUUUUUGEEEEEEE field... could you be more specific as to what you're interested in?

I'm mainly interested in quantum and astrophysics but I am trying to learn a bit about as many different fields as I can.

Hi,
I just spent an hour writing a really long and detailed reply...

then i accidentally deleted it :/

So, here are the highlights!

Go to university to study physics, it's the best way.

If you can't do that.

     Buy or download these books
     For inspiration
"The Character of Physical Law" Feynman
"The Feynman Lectures on Physics" Feynman
These are infinitely better than any popular science books. This guy was one of the best physics
minds of the 20th century, and also one of the best teachers.

     For maths
                             "Engineering Mathematics" K A Stroud
"Advanced Engineering Mathematics" K A Stroud
Imho, the best maths books for undergraduate physics (I base by maths lessons on these books, but don't tell anyone :P)

Get yourself an introductory undergraduate physics book, there are many, and they are usually called things like "Physics
for Scientists and Engineers" or something like that.

Many universities offer course content on-line for free! Check out MIT and Stanford. Also iTunes U. These are actual
videos of the lecture courses and the assignments/tests to download.

The most important thing is to do the exercises in the books. You must practice and practice to really understand. This
is really important. If you don't do this, you will only "think" you understand.

Read books, watch lectures, WORK THOUGH THE PROBLEMS, and ask lots of questions.

I didn't have time to type the whole thing again. PM me if you want any more help. :)

semi off topic but id also suggest this biography on Feynman: http://www.amazon.com/Surely-Feynman-Adventures-Curious-Character/dp/0393316041

It is hilarious, between breaking into safes and stealing doors its just a great read. Though obviously as a biography it is light on physics. And obviously as someone above pointed out he is a great teacher, so reading his books on physics would be a good place to start. Speaking of great teachers....

http://www.amazon.com/Asimov-Physics-Isaac/dp/0380418487
http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-Physics-Magnetism-Electricity-Electron/dp/0880292512
etc
Issac Asimov, great mind and a great teacher. Worth checking out.

I agree, Asimov's work is fantastic.

Also, I've always found electormagnetism to be the most beautiful of the great theories. It's so elegant in its formulation.

Thanks a lot I will definitely check these out. I am still in high school but I am planning on studying astrophysics at UC Davis as long as I can keep my grades up. I am currently watching Walter Lewin's lectures online and I am saving up money to buy a used textbook.

I'll look into all of them, biographies are hit or miss with me but scientists' are usually interesting.

Not cheap, but it sounds interesting. If I can find a used copy for not too much money I might pick it up.

dont be afraid to troll the ebook section/tunn's library, tons of textbooks can be found their alone. I also agree im not normally one for reading biography's but to date 3 have perked my interests and were thoroughly enjoyable. With that one on Feynman being one of them, the other being the "last" autobiography by Issac Asimov(i was laughing hysterically almost the entire way through. Truly an amazing read), the third being one on Hawking that was very good.

For a textbook I am thinking about getting University Physics by Young and Freeman since I can get a used copy of it for $20. Does anyone have any experience with it?
