That's a very good question to ask google. But a good answer is don't use free VPNs... especially for extra shady shit.

The problem is that free VPNs use your personal data for revenue, and utilize weak crypto. No VPN provider will keep your data private when presented with a court order. All VPNs keep logs, despite what their privacy policy states.

Ok, so, you advise proxies ?

Proxies aren't effective. Look up how to use the Tor browser bundle.

This.

Also, if you think a proxy chain instead of a free VPN is sufficient, you're probably going to get caught with whatever you're doing because that demonstrates a very poor understanding of TCP/IP.

Not trying to come off as a jerk or anything, but you're really not allowed to fuck up once with this kind of stuff.

There is no direct reason why proxies would be so bad apart from being slower than yo gramma on ya old man.
A daisy chain would increase the odds no matter how you put it.
Trusting a randomly popped box is about as bad as anyone providing VPN services,  probably still better than trusting an ISP.
Since you can nest some layers of encryption on the traffic it is all about the routing you would like to keep secret.
In a way a VPN leads right back to you since you pay for it and directly connect to them which an ISP knows.
Its all about who can keep a secret I guess.
Comparing time stamps on the traffic could lead to an easy match, would require control of the hops and who is granted  this acces remains a question.
Let me explain for them noobies:

           Hop   VPN  etc.
You ----  N ---  V --- N-- Server

Traffic will cross over the first hop which could be tapped and a time stamp is recorded for every packet.
If the second node is also 'tapped' you could do the same and match the client / server timestamps.
This does not mean anyone can look into the data just like that but it can be enough to give away a person.
This is theoretical in nature but perfectly feasible.

I'm using AirVPN. It's not free, but not expensive either (and you get three connections per account). It is ran by hacktivists, so these guys are idealists. It provides very good speed and you can configure it just as you want it to be. You can also run it over Tor if you want to. I suppose you know that simply using a VPN is far from enough to protect your privacy. Also assuming you know how to properly use a VPN (and any other anonymizing software when it comes to browsing habits and that kind of stuff).

/Btw, forgot to mention a very important fact about AirVPN:
You can actually pay via BTC. :)

Just going to give my opinion on this. I mean if you're looking for a VPN that is free it is certain that they will keep logs. Nevertheless, if you still want one then cyberghost or hotspot shield aren't bad. However, if you're looking for something that is paid for PureVPN is great!

I remember a talk i watched once about staying safe online and how feds can bust you. If you are looking for a VPN vendori suggest that you get that is advertising in a shady place. The reason why i say this is that no VPN vendor is willing to go jail for you, but if you find one that advertising in shady place then you know that they except shady traffic and the majority of there customer participate in shadiness.

NOTE: VPN's are for privacy, use TOR or i2p for anonymity.

From what I've heard most free VPNs keep logs, sell your information (they need to get money from somewhere), and usually don't provide the best service. It's probably best to just pay for one.
