Learning a new language
« on: March 02, 2012, 02:01:40 am »
It seems so overwhelming at times. Where does one find a good outlet to learn? How do you keep the motivation to stick with it? Along with teaching yourself programming at the same time it can seem hopeless. Anyone have similar struggles?

Although I noticed half the people here speak swedish already so maybe not.

I do my best learning when in that country. Class rooms never were much good to me in that aspect...

I would enjoy the opportunity to go to another country. I hear thats definitely the best way to learn a new language.

It really is. More practical too. You learn what you need to be able to say every day, and you learn how the people say it, not the uber formal way they teach in the class rooms

I know two languages. My native language and English, would love to learn French or Spanish.

I would enjoy the opportunity to go to another country. I hear thats definitely the best way to learn a new language.

Definitely true. No questions about it, you will learn the language from its own people not from a boring teacher in a class. However, you can get the basics from a class then you go to the country for further practice

Why would you learn Swedish ? You should learn a language that is practiced in many countries around the world. As I said before French or Spanish

Sorry LuciD, but I'd have to agree with everyone else. Actually going to the country and talking to people is the best way, because if you can't learn you're fucked. I've learned Japanese from doing that, and even though I've been in South Korea for a short amount of time, I've learned enough to survive.

As an alternative, I would recommend downloading a Rosetta's Stone program for the language you're trying to learn.

I do agree. I have an beginner knowledge in spanish and thats the one I want to work on the most.
I actually want to learn swedish purely because it would be cool to know a language other than one they teach in high school...and I'm mostly swedish. I just think it would be fun.

My girlfriend is teaching herself Japanese right now and shes definitely coming along so I know its possible. But I know you guys are right....how is it that you guys have all kinds of opportunities to go to other countries?

Agreed, best way to learn a new language is to be in the country itself. Since, than you unconsious mind is alot more busy with the language than just 1 hour in school. What you learn at school is good for your vocabulary, but that is it imo.

So if you get the chance to study abroad to the place you want. DO IT!  8)
